Synopsis

From one of the earliest mentions of its name in the sixth century to the Covid lockdowns of the twenty-first, this is a magnificent portrait of one of the world's great cities in its many iterations, from 'Edinburgh, the sink of abomination' to the Athens of the North and everything – including the home of the Enlightenment, the Festival City, the Aids Capital of Europe and a Mecca for tourists seeking tartan tat – in between.
As the nation's capital it has been critical to its progress and a witness to epochal events, such the tumultuous reign of Mary, Queen of Scots, the Reformation, the Forty-Five rebellion, the Disruption of the Church of Scotland and the reconvening of the Scottish Parliament. All of these and more feature. But this is not simply a book about the great and good, the famous and infamous. There is testimony aplenty from ordinary folk who may not have made their mark on history but who have contributed to Edinburgh's ever-expanding tapestry.
There are stories of body snatching and murder, drunkenness and drug-taking, sex and shopping, as well rants against inclement weather and the city council.

A vibrant new translation of Seneca's "On the Shortness of Life," a pointed reminder to make the most of our time

Who doesn't worry sometimes that smart phones, the Internet, and TV are robbing us of time and preventing us from having a life? How can we make the most of our time on earth? In the first century AD, the Stoic philosopher Seneca the Younger offered one of the most famous answers to that question in his essay "On the Shortness of Life"—a work that has more to teach us today than ever before. In How to Have a Life, James Romm presents a vibrant new translation of Seneca's brilliant essay, plus two Senecan letters on the same theme, complete with an inviting introduction.

With devastating satiric wit, skillfully captured in this translation, Seneca lampoons the ways we squander our time and fail to realize how precious it is. We don't allow people to steal our money, yet we allow them to plunder our time, or else we give it away ourselves in useless, idle pursuits. Seneca also describes how we can make better use of our brief days and years. In the process, he argues, we can make our lives longer, or even everlasting, because to live a real life is to attain a kind of immortality.

    Disappearance of the Surcouf...

When the Surcouf launched in 1929, it was a technological marvel. This wasn’t a conventional submarine at all, but a 3,300-ton, 300-foot-long submersible light cruiser. Armed not just with torpedoes but also a pair of eight-inch guns, the Surcouf had a range of over 10,000 miles and was equipped with a seaplane in a hanger and a prison capable of holding up to 40 prisoners. When it was launched, the submarine looked like something out of the novels of Jules Verne, and many people believed it would make all existing submarines (and many surface warships) obsolete. However, by the time France found itself at war with Nazi Germany in 1939, the Surcouf was outdated and basically irrelevant, though it was still in active service with the French Navy.
When France was defeated by Nazi Germany in June 1940, the majority of French troops and warships ceased fighting. However, some relocated to Britain, the only nation still fighting Germany, to join Free French forces under the command of the charismatic General Charles De Gaulle. The crew of the Surcouf joined the Free French Navy and served from late 1940 to February 1942, when she called in at the British port of Bermuda before sailing for the island of Tahiti, French Polynesia, in the South Pacific. On February 12, the Surcouf left Bermuda en route for Tahiti via the Panama Canal and was never seen again.
There have been many theories about what might have happened to the Surcouf and her 130-man crew, ranging from an accidental collision to sabotage and even accidental (or deliberate) attacks by her allies. As a result, the fate of the Surcouf has become one of the most enduring and baffling maritime mysteries, and it still generates a great deal of debate.

Ancient America - in Notes on...

First published in 1871, Ancient America delivers the earliest comprehensive English‑language survey of North America’s prehistoric past. Baldwin synthesizes scattered accounts—from the fluted‑point hunters of the Paleo‑Indian era to the monumental earthworks of the Mississippi‑Valley “Mound Builders,” and onward to the pyramidal cities of Mexico and Central America—into a single, lucid narrative. Rejecting then‑common Eurocentric myths, he argues that these civilizations were “wholly original, wholly American,” products of indigenous innovation rather than Old‑World transplantations. Richly illustrated with plates and informed by Baldwin’s correspondence with leading thinkers of his day, this seminal work frames American antiquities within a global archaeological context and remains a cornerstone for understanding the continent’s ancient ingenuity.
