Synopsis

Forced into marriage with a much older man after her father catches her in the arms of her female lover, Abigail accepts her lot in life in order to save her family.  The love of her life is long gone, cast from her life by her selfless decision, and she must accept that the men in her life—her father and now, her husband—are in control and will do with her as they please.
But after an untimely accident, as her husband lies dying, Abigail realizes there might be a glimmer of hope that she could go free.  Will she be strong enough to overcome the obstacles life is putting up and find a way back to the arms of the woman she is yearning for?

New York Times and Essence best-selling author Alexs D. Pate is also a professor of African American studies at the University of Minnesota. Set in the turbulent 1960s, West of Rehoboth is the story of 12-year-old Edward Massey's summertime coming of age in the resort town of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Edward and his family have escaped the heat and violence of inner-city Philadelphia every summer for the last 5 years. Staying at his Aunt Edna's house in West Rehoboth--the black side of town--Edward has the whole summer to have fun and explore. First, Edward wants to learn about the mysterious man named Uncle Rufus living in the shack behind Aunt Edna's. As Edward and Rufus form a tenuous friendship, Edward risks losing himself to the same negativity that torments his uncle. Pate's richly imagined West Rehoboth and its inhabitants will surprise and intrigue listeners. The spellbinding voice of narrator Dion Graham brings out every nuance of Pate's striving characters.

The remarkable story of the Langbourne brothers is picked up in 1893. Morris, just 17, makes the bold and risky decision to head north, deeper into Africa. Morris and his younger brother, David, thus embark on a new adventure - to set up business as traders.

After walking through the African bush for three months with six wagons laden with goods and hardly a track to guide them, Morris and David stop in the settlement of KoBulawayo and build their first warehouse out of wooden poles and mud. Realizing a radical change in plan is needed, Morris devises a new business strategy that propels them toward success. A political impasse rapidly develops between the European administration and the ruthless King Lobengula's massive Ndebele army. A brief and savage war erupts between the two powers; the brothers' business is unavoidably affected, and David is hunted by the Ndebele army when he tries to rescue a friend. Undaunted, but wiser to the perils of Africa, Morris sets his mind to recover their pride, their reputation, and their business.

It's the summer of 1957. In the heart of Chicago, first-generation Italian immigrants Angela Rosa and Agostino Peccatori are caught between worlds. Far from home and with five children born in the United States, the Peccatori family is left clinging to old country ways in an era of upending change. While Agostino spends his days running the neighborhood trattoria, Mio Fratello, Angela Rosa must face the building tension at home as her children struggle to define themselves within a family rooted in tradition. When Agostino's wandering eye can no longer be ignored, and lingering questions of fidelity and responsibility invade the Peccatoris' intimate world, the pressure to keep the family together mounts.Just as it seems the Peccatoris' stoic foundation and resilient spirit are enough to withstand the family friction, the events of a single tragic evening bring all their lives to a sudden and irreversible standstill. Haunted by overwhelming loss, and drowning in years of secrets and deception, the family begins to unravel under the burden of guilt. As the Peccatori children move into adulthood, alienated from one another by grief and the complexity of their adolescence, their ties of kinship are put to the ultimate test. Bound together by blood yet indelibly marked by loss, the Peccatori family becomes a testament to the power of sacrifice, loyalty, and unconditional love. Told through alternating voices and beautifully crafted prose, When the World Was Young is a stunning, poignant tale of one family's will to survive.
