  　平手 幹太郎は、幕末の剣客。 
  　本名は平田三亀というそうです。 
  　講談『天保水滸伝』では、笹川繁蔵一家にくみし、大利根河原の決闘に参加し、闘死したとされる人物です。 
  　さて、本作は、山本周五郎の手によるものですが、なぞおおき平手造酒の前半生を、屈辱と挫折のなかに見事に描ききっています。 
  ■登場人物紹介

  ・平手幹太郎（みきたろう）のち深喜 
  　主人公。剣術に秀でた青年で、家族のために努力を重ねるが、道場で破門される。誠実で義理堅く、どんな困難にも立ち向かう。 
  ・お豊 
  　幹太郎を助ける若い女性。17歳。小料理屋で働きながら孤独に生きているが、無邪気さと大胆さを併せ持つ。 
  ・秋田平八（へいはち） 
  幹太郎の友人で道場の経理を担当する元剣士。冷静で頼れる人物。 
  ・幸坊（こうぼう） 
  路地裏で幹太郎とお豊に出会う浮浪児。ませた性格だが、幹太郎たちに懐く。 
  道場関係者 
  ・淵辺十左衛門（ふちのべ じゅうざえもん） 
  　幹太郎の師範。厳格だが、自分の流儀を守るため幹太郎を追放する。 
  ・納屋孝之助（なや こうのすけ） 
  　道場の筆頭代師範で、幹太郎に敗北し、対抗心を抱く。 
  ・村田市之丞（むらた いちのじょう） 
  　道場幹部の一人。川地東吾と共に登場し、東吾の酒癖を心配する。 
  ・川地東吾（かわち とうご） 
  　次席師範代。酔うと手がつけられず、幹太郎に対抗心を示す。

  　幹太郎の妹。父の急死に伴い、兄に帰国を求めて訪ねてくる。
