Born in the small village of Nargund in North Karnataka, Nararatna charmed the people of all India across the narrow social walls of region, language and caste. उत्तर कर्नाटकातील नरगुंद या लहानशा गावात जन्मलेल्या त्या नररत्नाने प्रांत, भाषा, जात या संकुचित सामाजिक भिंती लीलया ओलांडित साऱ्या भारताच्या जनमानसाला मोहिनी घातली होती. देशाच्या कानाकोपऱ्यातील अनेक महापुरुषांची चरित्रे वैभवशाली भूतकाळातील गौरवशाली घटना त्यांच्या ओठांवर नाचत होत्या. परंपरा, जीवनमूल्ये, रामायण-महाभारत, गीता, पुराणे यांच्याबरोबरच आधुनिक काळातील अनेक लहानमोठ्या बऱ्यावाईट घटना, ललितसाहित्य, नाटक, चित्रपट, अनेक वैचारिक ग्रंथ व अन्य विविध विषयांचे संदर्भ त्यांच्या स्मृतिमंजुषेत नित्य जागे होते. व्यक्तिगत संसाराचा विचारही न करणाऱ्या त्यांनी असंख्य परिवारांची अकृत्रिम आपुलकी संपादन केली होती. लोकेषणा, दारेषणा, वित्तेषणा यांच्यापासून ते नित्य अलिप्त राहिले होते. पावलापावलावर आपल्या मोहक विभ्रमांनी खुणावणारे राजकारण व सत्ताकारण हा त्यांच्यासाठी एक वसा होता, वैभवी राष्ट्रजीवनाच्या निर्माणाचे एक साधन होते.राजकारणाच्या नावावर व्यक्तिगत आशा-आकांक्षा आणि अभिलाषा महत्त्वाकांक्षा यांचा खेळ त्यांनी कधी केला नाही. ऐन तारुण्यात स्वीकारलेल्या असिधाराव्रताचेपालन त्यांनी अखेरच्या श्वासापर्यंत केले.
