Beschreibung

Lightbulb's Bright History illuminates the captivating narrative of electric light, exploring its evolution from experimental curiosity to a world-altering technology. It wasn't merely an invention; it was a catalyst that reshaped society. The book highlights the intense competition between inventors like Thomas Edison and Joseph Swan, whose race to create a practical incandescent lamp involved not only scientific breakthroughs but also legal battles.

Before the lightbulb, our world was dictated by the limited hours of daylight, but this innovation unlocked unprecedented levels of productivity and transformed urban landscapes. The book presents a comprehensive overview, starting with early experiments in electricity, then focusing on the incandescent lamp's development and the societal changes it spurred.

It reveals how the electric light enabled the rise of the 24-hour society and fueled the Industrial Revolution, with factories operating around the clock. This history isn't just about technology; it's about the societal impact technology had on economics, urbanization, and daily life. The book progresses chronologically, tracing the development of the lightbulb and its subsequent global adoption.

It examines the lightbulb through a socio-technical lens, recognizing the interplay of social, economic, and political forces. By exploring this invention history, the book offers valuable lessons on innovation and its far-reaching consequences, making it an engaging read for anyone interested in history and technology.

This is an audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No. 55 by Francis Story (Anāgārika Sugatānanda), The Scientific Approach to Buddhism and The Appeal of Buddhism, two essays narrated by Christa Michel. The print edition can be found in the Pariyatti Edition of Collected Bodhi Leaves Vol. 2. The eBook of Bodhi Leaves No. 55 can be downloaded from the BPS website.
Excerpt from The Scientific Approach to Buddhism:
At present it may look as though man has only searched out the secrets of the universe in order to destroy himself with the power he has acquired; and of that there is certainly a danger. But I believe that a change in outlook is beginning to dawn, and that science itself, having destroyed the basis of much wrong thinking, is drawing us ever nearer to the realisation of the truth proclaimed by the Enlightened One. This is what I mean by “the scientific approach to Buddhism;” without being aware of it, the modern scientist and philosopher are being propelled irresistibly in the direction of Buddhism. Their uncertainties and doubts are spiritual “growing pains;” but a time will come quickly when they will realise that, although they have had to reject everything on which their ordinary religious and moral beliefs are founded, there is a higher religion—one based upon systematic investigation and the sincere search for truth—which will restore their lost faith in the universal principles of justice, truth and compassion. Those who now believe that man has come to the end of his tether will then see the opening up of vistas into the future that they only dimly suspect, and will recognise, beyond it all, the final goal of complete emancipation from the fetters of ignorance and delusion.

An insightful collection from the Against the Rules podcast that answers the ultimate question: can even Michael Lewis be coached?

Journalist and bestselling author Michael Lewis’ podcast Against the Rules is dedicated to examining what's happened to fairness. It feels like there's less of it every day, and one of the “haves” of those who are better off includes access to coaching. But does having a coach help or hinder us?

Making Winners is a highly personal anthology of Michael Lewis' podcast episodes on coaching. He visits his own high school baseball coach and subjects himself to publicly trying to overcome his greatest fear – with help from a coach, of course. Other chapters focus on lending practices, college admissions, professional sports, and psychological well-being. Who are the people trying to level the playing field, and are they making an impact? Making Winners includes a new foreword and afterword written with Lewis’ trademark insight and wry humor.

Anyone new to podcasts in general or Against the Rules specifically will become engrossed in Making Winners, which, with over five hours of beautifully produced audio content, highlights Lewis’ trademark insight and storytelling.

“Without music, life would be a mistake.”“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.” ...“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”“I'm not upset that you lied to me, I'm upset that from now on I can't believe you.”
    Nietzsche

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's autobiography, Ecce Homo, was the last prose work that he wrote before his illness in 1889. Coming at the end of an extraordinarily productive year in which he had produced The Twilight of the Idols and The Antichrist, Nietzsche shuns any pretense at modesty with chapter titles include “Why I am so Wise”, “Why I am so Clever” and “Why I Write Such Excellent Books”. His translator Anthony M. Ludovici states, Ecce Homo “is not only a coping-stone worthy of the wonderful creations of that year, but also a fitting conclusion to his whole life, in the form of a grand summing up of his character as a man, his purpose as a reformer, and his achievement as a thinker.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was a German philosopher, cultural critic and philologist whose work has exerted a profound influence on modern intellectual history. He began his career as a classical philologist before turning to philosophy.
