Sinopse

Audience Engagement Techniques explores how filmmakers and television writers use pacing and structure to captivate viewers. It argues that these elements aren't just aesthetic choices, but vital tools for shaping emotional responses and intellectual understanding.

The book investigates how manipulating time through pacing affects tension and suspense, while structural design, like using cliffhangers, creates anticipation and emotional investment. By understanding these techniques, industry professionals can craft more compelling narratives.

The book begins by examining the psychological underpinnings of audience perception before diving into practical applications. It analyzes pacing techniques, such as editing and scene length, and dissects narrative structures like the three-act structure.

Examples from film theory, cognitive psychology, and industry case studies are used to support the arguments.

Ultimately, the book provides a framework for designing audience-engaging stories, offering guidelines applicable to films, television, and even business presentations. Its focus on intentional pacing and structure sets it apart, providing a practical, evidence-based approach valuable for film students, screenwriters, directors, and producers aiming to create successful projects.

Elton John is not only "still standing," he is a living superlative, the ultimate record-breaking, award-winning survivor of the great era of pop and rock music that he helped to shape during his six decades in the music industry. Yet few of his numerous biographies and song guides take him as a historical subject worthy of scholarly study.

In contrast, On Elton John approaches the artist seriously and analytically, while still couched in a highly accessible style. Author Matthew Restall offers a new way to explore Sir Elton's career and music within the contexts of other artists and of sweeping shifts in popular culture during his lifetime. Each of the ten chapters is anchored to an Elton song, rooted in its pop culture history, and advances a clear argument, pairing him with figures ranging from Bernie (Bernie Taupin, his lyricist) to Bennie (of the Jets), from "frenemy" David Bowie to artists like Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin, and Dua Lipa, from Diana (the princess) to Jesus (yes, that one).

A must-have for fans, On Elton John will appeal to a wide range of audiences interested in music history, popular culture, and the social issues of our era.

    Heavyweight - Black Boxers and...

    Jordana Moore Saggese

In Heavyweight, Jordana Moore Saggese examines images of Black heavyweight boxers to map the visual terrain of racist ideology in the United States, paying particular attention to the intersecting discourses of Blackness, masculinity, and sport. Looking closely at the "shadow archive" of portrayals across fine art, vernacular imagery, and public media at the turn of the twentieth century, she demonstrates how the images of boxers reveal the racist stereotypes implicit in them, many of which continue to structure ideas of Black men today. With a focus on both anonymous fighters and notorious champions, including Jack Johnson, Saggese contends that popular images of these men provided white spectators a way to render themselves experts on Blackness and Black masculinity. These images became the blueprint for white conceptions of the Black male body—existing between fear and fantasy, simultaneously an object of desire and an instrument of violence. Reframing boxing as yet another way whiteness establishes the violent mythology of its supremacy, Saggese highlights the role of imagery in normalizing a culture of anti-Blackness.
