Synopsis

"Java for Beginners" offers a methodical path for aspiring programmers to master one of the world's most widely-used programming languages, focusing on three essential pillars: basic syntax, object-oriented programming principles, and practical application development. This comprehensive guide bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world implementation, making complex programming ideas accessible through a carefully structured learning approach.

The book stands out for its emphasis on understanding fundamental principles rather than mere syntax memorization, incorporating over 150 hands-on coding examples drawn from real-world scenarios. Beginning with Java's origins and evolution since 1995, the book progressively guides readers through basic concepts like variables and control structures before advancing to more complex topics such as inheritance and polymorphism.

What sets this guide apart is its spiral learning method, which revisits concepts with increasing complexity, allowing readers to build upon their knowledge gradually. The tutorial-style format, combined with visual diagrams and detailed explanations, ensures that even complete beginners can grasp complex programming concepts.

The book's practical focus shines through its integration of guided projects and exercises, ranging from text-based applications to basic GUI development. While maintaining its focus on Java SE fundamentals, it teaches essential software development skills like clean coding practices, documentation, and debugging techniques. This approach makes it particularly valuable for beginners, students, and professionals transitioning to Java, providing them with both the theoretical foundation and practical skills needed for real-world programming.

"Henry Gee presents a pithy, fascinating account of the stages of biological evolution. ... a meditative and friendly listening experience. —AudioFile on A (Very) Short History of Life on EarthWritten and read by the award-winning author of A (Very) Short History of Life on Earth: a history of humanity on the brink of decline.A Next Big Idea Club Must-Read SelectionWe are living through a period that is unique in human history. For the first time in more than ten thousand years, the rate of human population growth is slowing down. In the middle of this century population growth will stop, and the number of people on Earth will start to decline—fast. In this provocative book, award-winning science writer Henry Gee offers a concise, brilliantly-told history of our species—and argues that we are on a rapid, one-way trip to extinction. The Decline and Fall of the Human Empire narrates the dramatic rise of humanity, how a scattered range of small groups across several continents eventually inbred, interacted, fought, established stable communities and food supplies, and began the process of dominating the planet. The human story is relatively brief—the oldest fossils of H. Sapiens date to approximately 300,000 years ago—yet the spread of our species has been unstoppable…until recently. As Gee demonstrates, our population has peaked, and is declining; our environment is becoming inimical to human life in many locations; our core resources of water, arable land, and air are diminishing; and new diseases, simmering conflicts, and ambiguous technologies threaten our collective health. Can we still change our course? Or is our own extinction inevitable? There could be a way out, but the launch window is narrow.Unless Homo sapiens establishes successful colonies in space within the next two centuries, our species is likely to stay earthbound and will have vanished entirely within another ten thousand years, bringing the seven-million-year story of the human lineage to an end. With assured narration, dramatic stories, and his signature sprightly humor, Henry Gee envisions new opportunities for the future of humanity—a future that will reward facing challenges with ingenuity, foresight, and cooperation.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

All over the world, life is returning — often where we least expect it. Wolves are roaming once-empty forests. Rivers, freed from their dams, are carving new paths. Meadows are blooming on forgotten farmland. Nature, long subdued, is finding its way back.
In Regrow, Alex Southwick explores the quiet revolution of rewilding — the global movement to restore ecosystems, revive biodiversity, and rekindle our relationship with the living world. From the Scottish Highlands to the savannas of Kenya, from urban green corridors to community-led restoration projects, Southwick meets the people proving that healing the Earth is not a dream, but a process already underway.
Blending science, storytelling, and hope, Regrow reveals that recovery is not only possible but astonishingly swift when given the chance. It’s a reminder that the planet’s wounds can be mended — and that rewilding nature begins with rewilding ourselves.

HowExpert Guide to Phlebotomy is a glimpse into the life of being a phlebotomist in a private clinic, hospital, or plasma plant. It includes an in-depth description of the types of patients we see, the equipment we use, and how to perform blood draws. The most important part of our profession is drawing blood by inflicting the least amount of pain possible for the patient. This means that you need to be educated on the procedures for specific tests such as a Heparin Quant Assay, a PTINR, and Lipid Panels. If you don’t know these tests, odds are they will need to be redrawn, and the patient will have to undergo an unnecessary procedure. This is a safety problem since every time we puncture the skin of a patient, we risk introducing infection into their bloodstream. This book will also teach you about the order of draw, descriptions of veins, descriptions of patients, and a multitude of different scenarios. If you are beginning a career or are interested in beginning a career in phlebotomy, this book will give you a good foundation of knowledge to build upon with tangible experience.
    About the Author
MacKenna Balsewicz is a 20-year-old mother of one who has spent the last three years working as a phlebotomist at different professional facilities. She started her training at Biomat Plasma Center, where she gained the confidence and skill to draw blood and care for donors. After working at Biomat for 12 months, she transferred to Bryan Hospital to work in the laboratory department. She has fallen in love with performing phlebotomy in the hospital setting and now works at Nebraska Medicine, where she draws upwards of 60 people daily. Along with being a phlebotomist, she will be graduating from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in May of 2023 with her bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

Do you love wandering around you garden looking at your trees, bushes, plants and wonder what use they might have? Of course, the turnips, runner beans et cetera on your vegetable patch you know that they are good for you. But what about marigolds, dandelions, marsh mallow, acorns, pine needles? Yes, they are all edible one way or another. And going for a ramble in the Countryside? There are many wild plants, shrubs and trees that have some part that is edible. But be careful and know exactly what it is you are picking. There are two umbiliferae that you need to be aware of. Cow parsley is edible but the plant is very similar in appearance to Hemlock, which if ingested can kill you. Also, do you know which plants contain ingredients that can be made into health boosters or medicine? A surprising number, but not all of these are edible. Many plants are toxic to humans, although some contain ingredients which can be made into medicines. This book surveys over 600 plant species which were compiled into a comprehensive data-base, from which tables were constructed in the book for easy reference. Common names are given against their Botanical names. Flowers were grouped by their petal numbers. The use of each plant was recorded: is it edible, does it have health benefits, is it toxic? A very useful compendium of plant species for all plant lovers. The book is illustrated with numerous colour images of various flowers and plants.
