Choro, also popularly called chorinho ("little cry" or "little lament"), is an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre which originated in 19th century Rio de Janeiro. Despite its name, the music often has a fast and happy rhythm. It is characterized by virtuosity, improvisation and subtle modulations, and is full of syncopation and counterpoint. Every hymn begins its life as a poem—and we can give our favorite hymns fresh life by returning to their poetic roots. This anthology of several centuries' worth of great hymns invites us to experience these works as devotional poetry—to slow down and savor their well-turned phrases and evocative language. English professor Leland Ryken provides some historical background for each hymn, but his focus is on literary analysis. Combined with relevant Scripture texts, the result is a wonderfully devotional and poetic study of the Christian faith.

If you're looking for the events that inspired the lyrics to all my songs? Those stories are in this book. If you're looking for what I did when I was younger? That's in here. What changed me, made me stop hating and hurting? It's all here. This is my story and I'm sticking to it. That's the one thing I have, the truth.

Volume one of Black Heart Fades Blue, a three-part memoir by the founder and frontman for one of punk rock's most notorious acts, Poison Idea

In 1980, Jerry A. formed Poison Idea, a Portland-based punk band that gave voice to disaffected and disenfranchised youth for over thirty years. As happened to so many punk bands, Jerry A. and Poison Idea also went all in on drugs and drinking as they toured the country, spiraling out of control and blowing both the band and their lives apart.

Black Heart Fades Blue is not an apology or a nostalgic catalog of events, but a true reckoning with one's past and present. A memoir of a time and a place and a movement, as well as a deep conversation about the memories and moments we leave behind, Black Heart Fades Blue is a deep exploration of an unconventional life.

Housing and urban policy play a crucial role in shaping the development and functioning of cities. These policies not only determine how housing is distributed, financed, and regulated but also have a profound impact on the quality of life for urban residents. As urban populations grow at unprecedented rates, particularly in developing regions, the need for comprehensive housing policies that address affordability, accessibility, and sustainability becomes increasingly urgent.
At its core, housing policy refers to the set of laws, regulations, and strategies designed to ensure that all residents have access to safe, affordable, and adequate housing. Urban policy, meanwhile, extends beyond housing to include broader strategies for city planning, infrastructure, and public services. Together, housing and urban policy aim to create cities that are not only livable but also resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.
Historically, housing policies have evolved in response to changing economic, social, and political circumstances. From post-war housing booms to modern challenges like urban sprawl and rising inequality, policies have adapted in varying ways. However, many cities still struggle with issues like the shortage of affordable housing, homelessness, and housing inequality. Rapid urbanization, exacerbated by global migration and population growth, has put further strain on already limited housing resources. As a result, addressing housing needs has become one of the foremost concerns for urban policymakers around the world.

    Why Tammy Wynette Matters

With hits such as “Stand By Your Man” and “Golden Ring,” Tammy Wynette was an icon of American domesticity and femininity. But there were other sides to the first lady of country. Steacy Easton places the complications of Wynette’s music and her biography in sharp-edged relief, exploring how she made her sometimes-tumultuous life into her work, a transformation that was itself art.

Wynette created a persona of high femininity to match the themes she sang about—fawning devotion, redemption in heterosexual romance, the heartbreak of loneliness. Behind the scenes, her life was marked by persistent class anxieties; despite wealth and fame, she kept her beautician’s license. Easton argues that the struggle to meet expectations of southernness, womanhood, and southern womanhood, finds subtle expression in Wynette’s performance of “Apartment No. 9”—and it’s because of these vocal subtleties that it came to be called the saddest song ever written. Wynette similarly took on elements of camp and political critique in her artistry, demonstrating an underappreciated genius. Why Tammy Wynette Matters reveals a musician who doubled back on herself, her façade of earnestness cracked by a melodrama that weaponized femininity and upended feminist expectations, while scoring twenty number-one hits.
