  "A Happy Man" is a very funny and satiric story that tells us that happiness is easy and everything is in our hands.
  The action happens in the passenger train. One man tries to find his carriage, opening doors and saying "No, wrong again!" every time he misses. But suddenly he hears his name "Ivan Alexyevitch! What brings you here? Is it you?" It was his good mate Pyotr Petrovitch. They start chatting and Pyotr Petrovitch finds out that Ivan Alexyevitch has been married that day and he is coming straight away after the wedding. He describes how happy he is, while his listeners are laughing because Ivan is drunk for a bit and acts really funny. Suddenly he recognizes that he missed not only a carriage, but the train itself! And he moves to Moscow, while his young wife moves to Saint-Petersburg. His happiness disappears and he needs to decide what to do next.

  “Every man desires to live long, but no man wishes to be old.” 
  As a survivor of a shipwreck, Lemuel Gulliver encounters some entirely absurd things – at first, he is in the land of Lilliputians, the tiny men; but later he ventures to the land of the giants. The tale continues to oscillate between the extremes as he meets immensely wise and scientifically aware people before being faced with excessive self-preoccupation and ignorance. Whatever that societal order, Gulliver consistently is a witness to the abuse of power. The satire often overemphasises the contraries in order to accentuate our individual and societal flaws and proneness to being corrupt and biased. In such a distinct way it rebukes human narrow-mindedness and accentuates our subjectivity. 
  The novel’s multivalence has made it a celebrated children’s bedtime read – in particular, the first book – as well as a treasury of satirical metaphors and allusions that expose human and societal flaws in general and those of the English nobility in particular. The novel is an answer to Robinson Crusoe – it mocks Defoe’s protagonist’s too-good-to-be-true human aptness and reason. While some might find Swift’s modus operandi misanthropic, others will see him as a pragmatist who exemplifies how the excesses and polarities are detrimental and yet inescapable. Silly and bizarre, thought-provoking and alarming, this work is meant to be read and re-read as equally a jolly story and a philosophical or political collage of insights.

  Ambrose Bierce (1842–c.1914) was an American writer, journalist, and satirist known for his mordant wit and dark humor. Born in Meigs County, Ohio, he served in the Union Army during the Civil War, experiences that deeply influenced his later works. After the war, Bierce moved to San Francisco, where he became a prominent figure in literary circles. He contributed to newspapers and magazines with his sharp, often cynical prose. Bierce is best known for his short story collection "Tales of Soldiers and Civilians," particularly the story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," and his satirical dictionary, "The Devil's Dictionary." His later years were marked by travel to England and Mexico; his disappearance in Mexico around 1913 or 1914 remains one of literature's most famous mysteries. Bierce's legacy includes his contributions to the genres of horror and fantasy and his critical view of human nature.
