Synopsis

"Giant's Causeway" explores one of Earth's most remarkable geological wonders, focusing on the spectacular hexagonal basalt columns that line Northern Ireland's coast. This UNESCO World Heritage site, formed approximately 60 million years ago through massive volcanic eruptions, showcases over 40,000 interlocking columns that have captivated scientists and visitors alike.

The book masterfully explains how specific conditions during the Paleogene Period, including precise cooling rates and chemical composition of lava flows, created these distinctive formations. Through a blend of academic rigor and accessible prose, the text guides readers from basic geological concepts to complex Earth processes, examining three main aspects: the volcanic origins, the geometric patterns of cooling basalt, and the site's significance in understanding plate tectonics.

The narrative weaves together modern scientific understanding with historical perspectives, utilizing recent research findings and advanced imaging techniques to reveal the hidden structures beneath the visible columns. Detailed illustrations, geological maps, and cross-sections help readers visualize the complex processes at work.

The book distinguishes itself by connecting Giant's Causeway to broader geological phenomena, including similar formations in Iceland and Scotland, while incorporating insights from multiple scientific disciplines. Each chapter builds upon previous knowledge, making complex concepts accessible to both geology students and curious general readers.

The work concludes with practical applications in volcanic hazard assessment and geological engineering, while addressing ongoing conservation challenges. This comprehensive approach makes it an invaluable resource for understanding both the specific site and its place in Earth's broader geological narrative.

Your heart is a miracle in motion, a marvel of construction unsurpassed by any human-made creation. It beats 100,000 times every day—if you were to live to 100, that would be more than 3 billion beats across your lifespan. Despite decades
of effort in labs all over the world, we have not yet been able to replicate the heart’s perfect engineering. But, as Sian Harding shows us in The Exquisite Machine, new scientific developments are opening up the mysteries of the heart.
And this explosion of new science—ultrafast imaging, gene editing, stem cells, artificial intelligence, and advanced microscopy—has crucial, real-world consequences for health and well-being.

Harding—a world leader in cardiac research—explores the relation between the emotions and heart function, reporting that the heart not only responds to our emotions but creates them as well. The condition known as broken heart
syndrome, for example, is a real disorder that can follow bereavement or stress.

The Exquisite Machine describes the evolutionary forces that have shaped the heart’s response to damage, the astonishing rejuvenating power of stem cells, how we can avoid heart disease, and why it can be so hard to repair a damaged
heart. It tells the stories of patients who have had the devastating experiences of a heart attack, chaotic heart rhythms, or stress-induced acute heart failure. And it describes how cutting-edge technologies are enabling experiments and clinical
trials that will lead us to new solutions to the worldwide scourge of heart disease.

A gripping expose of the murky underbelly of the Indian healthcare system

95 per cent of healthcare facilities have less than five workers
30 million people are pushed into poverty by healthcare costs
    9 lakh C-sections are preventable
7.04 lakh children under the age of five die of pneumonia and diarrhoea every year
For Dr Sumanth C. Raman, the numbers don't lie. Decades of witnessing the inner workings of India's healthcare industry first-hand have given him ample reason to question and challenge it.
In Sick Business, through personal accounts of patients, interviews with doctors and other medical professionals, and numerous reports, he unveils a chilling portrait of a healthcare system marred by vested interests, shady research, lax State intent, questionable ethics and general disarray. Overburdened public hospitals, expensive private healthcare, a rampant culture of quacks, the nexus between big pharma and doctors, a silent epidemic of surgeries and over-diagnosis-the book deals with such burning topics and more as it uncovers the truth behind the pristine façade of hospitals and the doctors who work within.
Sick Business is a clarion call for reform and change. A gripping expose, in the end the book equips you with some real answers and the tough questions you need to ask when your family's health-and perhaps your own-is at stake.

The Heat and the Fury - On the...

As a journalist on the climate security beat, Peter Schwartzstein has been chased by kidnappers, badly beaten, detained by police, and told, in no uncertain terms, that he was no longer welcome in certain countries. Yet these personal brushes with violence are simply a hint of the conflict simmering in our warming world.

Schwartzstein has visited ravaged Iraqi towns where ISIS used drought as a recruiting tool and weapon of terror. And he has heard the fear in the voices of women from around the world who say their husbands' tempers flare when the temperature ticks up.

In The Heat and the Fury, he not only puts listeners on the frontlines of climate violence but gives us the context to make sense of seemingly senseless acts. As Schwartzstein deftly shows, climate change is often the spark that ignites long smoldering fires, the extra shove that pushes individuals, communities, and even nations over the line between frustration and lethal fury. What, he asks, can ratchet down the aggression?

Schwartzstein's incisive analysis of geopolitics, unparalleled on-the-ground reporting, and keen sense of human nature offer the clearest picture to date of the violence that threatens us all.

The Black Death - Plague and...

The story of the Black Death begins long before it reached the shores of Europe. At the heart of the devastation was a bacterium called Yersinia pestis, the microorganism responsible for one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. This pathogen is believed to have originated in the arid plains of Central Asia, where it lived in a natural reservoir within rodent populations, particularly marmots. These animals, though mostly isolated in remote areas, became the starting point for a chain of transmission that would eventually span continents.
Early outbreaks of plague-like illnesses were recorded in China and other parts of Asia as early as the 13th century, suggesting that the bacterium was already circulating in the region. However, it was the growing network of trade routes, especially the Silk Road, that allowed the disease to move rapidly from one community to another. Merchants, caravans, and travelers unknowingly carried infected fleas and rats from one trading hub to the next, creating a direct path for the disease to follow.
One of the most significant early episodes linked to the Black Death's arrival in Europe occurred during the Mongol siege of the Crimean city of Caffa (modern-day Feodosiya) in 1346. According to some historical accounts, the Mongols, after suffering an outbreak in their own ranks, used the infected corpses of their dead as biological weapons by catapulting them over the city walls. While the historical accuracy of this account is debated, it symbolizes the critical role Caffa played as a point of transmission. From this port city, fleeing Genoese merchants are believed to have carried the disease back to Italy by ship, bringing the plague directly into European trading centers.
