Synopsis

Flamingo Facts explores the captivating biology of flamingos, revealing how their unique traits are interconnected adaptations shaped by their environment. These iconic birds offer insights into broader ecological principles, such as nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems and the evolution of specialized feeding habits. One intriguing fact is that a flamingo's vibrant pink hue comes from carotenoid pigments found in their diet of algae and crustaceans. Another fascinating aspect is their ability to stand on one leg for extended periods, a behavior linked to minimizing muscular effort.

The book progresses logically, beginning with an introduction to the flamingo family and its evolutionary history. It then delves into the science behind their pink coloration, the biomechanics of their one-legged stance, and their specialized feeding habits.

The book emphasizes the importance of conservation, addressing the challenges flamingos face due to habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. By focusing on a single species, Flamingo Facts illustrates broader principles of adaptation and conservation, making it a valuable resource for nature enthusiasts and anyone curious about the natural world.

As an amateur naturalist, Brooke Williams is constantly awed by his encounters with the wild world. Since a life-altering dream about a dragonfly, the blending of the worlds of mythology and psychology hold him with equal footing with the biological world. After the dream the dragonfly would not be contained to his sleeping world, it invaded his waking life as well causing him to contemplate the re-enchantment of our world, to rediscover wonder, mystery, and meaning in our relationship with nature and the environment. What is the wisdom being laid before us by the creatures that reside alongside us, creatures like ravens, coyotes, bees, and dragonflies?
In this 2025 interview with Justine Willis Toms, Williams explores dragonflies as both literal creatures and symbolic guides. He invites us to consider new perspectives on nature, consciousness, and the practice of re-enchantment in our modern world.
Brooke Williams is a naturalist and environmental writer who covers subjects such as evolution, consciousness, and his own ventures exploring both the inner and outer wilderness. The 1931 winner of the Newbery Medal, finally in audiobook form with new original music.

Elizabeth Coatsworth originally published The Cat Who Went to Heaven in 1930 with illustrations by celebrated artist Lynd Ward. Set in a village in ancient Japan, the tale recounts the adoption of a cat by a poor painter and his housekeeper. At first suspicious of the feline, the painter grows fonder as he depicts a succession of animals in a large silkscreen painting portraying “The Death of the Lord Buddha,” commissioned by the village temple. As each animal appears in the painting, the reader receives a Buddhist folktale illustrating Buddhist teachings of kindness, mercy, and sacrifice.

As the painter painstakingly creates his masterpiece, the adopted cat, whom the artist names Good Fortune, demonstrates a devotion to the Lord Buddha and his teachings that surprises and inspires the humble household. Through her behavior and deeds, Good Fortune steadily overcomes the reputation of the cat as the one animal too proud to pay homage to the Lord Buddha. She earns her place alongside her fellow creatures, her place in heaven.

While generations have treasured The Cat Who Went to Heaven, this is the first audiobook production of the work. Why? The music. Coatsworth broke up the narrative into eight parts, and ended each part with a “song of the housekeeper” that provided an emotional summary of the preceding scenes. Coatsworth presented the songs, however, as simple poems, and never offered the chords or melodies that would allow a narrator to easily sing the songs. This audiobook contains original musical compositions based on Coatsworth’s lyrics from the text.

The comedian, actor, television host, podcast king, and New York Times bestselling author of President Me, Not Taco Bell Material, and In Fifty Years We’ll All Be Chicks now lays down the law on the plight of the modern parent.
Parents, do you often think that if your kids had to grow up the way you did—without iPads, 70-inch flatscreen TVs, American Girl dolls, and wifi in the climate controlled minivan—that they might actually be better off? Do you feel underappreciated or ignored? Do you worry you’re raising a bunch of spoiled softies who will never know how to do anything themselves—because you do everything for them? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need Daddy, Stop Talking.
Adam rips parenthood a new one, telling it straight about what adults must do if they don’t want to have to support their kids forever. Using his own crappy childhood as a cautionary tale, and touting the pitfalls of the kind of helicopter parenting so pervasive today, Daddy, Stop Talking is the only parenting book you should ever read. Here, too, is sage advice to Adam’s own kids—and to future parents—on what matters most: dating; drinking and drugs; buying your first house and car; puberty; and what kind of assholes his kids (and yours) should avoid becoming. Even if his own son and daughter pretty much ignore everything he says, you shouldn’t. And you’re welcome. Again.
