Synopsis

Detective Yi Chang needs another miracle. Ten years ago his sister was healed of her deadly cancer by a mysterious cult leader, but now his young niece has inherited the same disease. The only lead Yi Chang has is the body of a murder victim found in an abandoned building in the Korean seaside. The man was stabbed repeatedly, but the knife found next to the body is covered with someone else's blood. Even stranger, the victim's face is covered with malignant melanoma, a disease he did not have. With time running short, Yi Chang must discover how this murder is related to the cult leader he so desperately seeks.
Award-winning Korean science fiction and fantasy sensation Cho Yeeun, author of the hit The New Seoul Park Jelly Massacre, is back with a haunting tale that explores the price we pay for miracles.

A Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year: “Part social satire, part thriller, and entirely clever” (Elle).   It is a midsummer’s evening in the English countryside, and the three grown Palmer children are coming to the end of an enjoyable meal in the company of their partners and offspring. From this pleasant vantage point they play a dinner-party game: What kind of society would you be willing to accept if you didn’t know your place in it? But the abstract question of justice, like all their family conversations, is eventually brought back to the more pressing problem of their eccentric mother, Frieda, the famous writer, who has abandoned them and her old life, and gone to live alone in Exmoor.   Frieda has always been a powerful and puzzling figure, a monster mother with a mysterious past. What is she plotting against them now? Has some inconvenient form of political correctness led her to favor her enchanting half-Guyanese grandson? What will she do with her money? Is she really writing her memoirs? And why has she disappeared? Has the dark spirit of Exmoor finally driven her mad?  The Witch of Exmoor brilliantly interweaves high comedy and personal tragedy, unraveling the story of a family whose comfortable, rational lives, both public and private, are about to be violently disrupted by a succession of sinister, messy events. “Leisurely and mischievous,” it is a dazzling, wickedly gothic tale of a British matriarch, her three grasping children, and the perils of self-absorption (The New Yorker).   “As meticulous as Jane Austen, as deadly as Evelyn Waugh.” —Los Angeles Times

Quirky Sleuths. Big Murders. Very Bad Alibis.

County fire investigator Cal Rourke trusts burn patterns more than people, which is useful when a widely hated developer dies inside a historic Briarfall barn scheduled to make way for a controversial resort expansion. The fire looks electrical. Cal's cousin had publicly threatened the victim. Half the county would prefer the whole thing declared an accident before the next planning vote.

Cal has a different problem. The point of origin is too clean.

Someone knew enough about fire to make faulty wiring look guilty, but not enough to understand what ventilation, soot, heat, and an opened door would reveal afterward. With his daughter visiting, his own family tangled in the suspect list, and retired arson investigator Arlo Danner appreciating the killer's technique far too enthusiastically, Cal has to read what the fire was forced to say. People can rehearse an alibi. Fire cannot.
