Beschreibung

The Complete Historical Works of Xenophon offers an unparalleled insight into the socio-political milieu of ancient Greece through the lens of one of its most astute observers. Comprised of works such as 'ÄòAnabasis,'Äô which chronicles his journey alongside the Ten Thousand, and 'ÄòHellenica,'Äô a continuation of Thucydides' history focusing on the Peloponnesian War, this compilation showcases Xenophon'Äôs distinctive narrative style that blends vivid storytelling with philosophical reflection. His prose, marked by clarity and precision, situates it within the broader context of classical literature, emphasizing the interplay between military leadership and ethical governance. Xenophon, a contemporary of Socrates and a soldier turned historian, was deeply influenced by the tumultuous events of his time, including the chaos of the Peloponnesian War and the decline of Athenian power. His scholarly pursuits were not merely academic; they stemmed from practical experiences and encounters with notable figures, including Socrates himself. This dual perspective as both participant and chronicler infuses his works with a unique authenticity, offering readers an intimate glimpse into the challenges of leadership and virtue. This comprehensive edition is indispensable for those seeking to understand the complex legacy of ancient Greece. It illuminates the fabric of a society undergoing profound transformation, making it a vital resource for scholars, students, and enthusiasts of classical literature and history.

What makes sex magnificent? What are the qualities of extraordinary erotic intimacy and what are the elements that help to bring it about? Is great sex the stuff that people remember nostalgically from the "honeymoon" phase of their relationships, or can sex improve over time?

Magnificent Sex is based on the largest, in-depth interview study ever conducted with people who are having extraordinary sex. It gathers the nuggets for remarkable sex from the "experts," distilling them into an attainable blueprint for ordinary lovers who want to make erotic intimacy grow over the course of a lifetime. Looking at factors including individual and relational qualities, empathic communication, and the myths and realities of magnificent sex, this book offers accessible and evidence-based guidance for lovers and therapists alike. It is replete with frank and often humorous interviews with straight and LGBTQ individuals and couples, those who are "vanilla" and "kinky," monogamous and consensually non-monogamous and healthy and chronically ill. This illuminating book explores the implications of the findings to develop a model that effectively tackles the common problems of low desire and frequency. The "cure" for low desire is to create desirable sex!

For the seventy-fifth anniversary of 1984, Laura Beers explores George Orwell's still-radical ideas and why they are critical today.

George Orwell devoted his career to exposing social injustice and political duplicity, urging his readers to face hard truths about Western society and politics. Now, the uncanny parallels between the interwar era and our own—rising inequality, censorship, and challenges to traditional social hierarchies—make his writing even more of the moment. In Orwell's Ghosts, historian Laura Beers considers Orwell's full body of work—his six novels, three nonfiction works, as well as his brilliant essays—to examine what "Orwellian" means and to take it out of the hands of political pundits. She explores how Orwell's writing on free speech addresses the proliferation of "fake news," highlights his vivid critiques of capitalism, and, in contrast, analyzes his failure to understand feminism. Timely, wide-ranging, and thought-provoking, Orwell's Ghosts investigates how the writings of a lionized champion of truth and freedom can help us face the crises of modernity.

Before the Korean War and the subsequent famine that gripped the Korean Peninsula from 1950 to 1953, Korea was a land marked by centuries of history, cultural development, and foreign influence. In the early 20th century, the Korean people were under the harsh rule of Japanese colonialism, which lasted from 1910 to 1945. During this period, the Japanese occupation had devastating effects on the Korean economy, agriculture, and society. The Japanese implemented policies that restructured the land distribution system, forced farmers to increase rice production for export, and destroyed much of the local economy in the process. This left the Korean Peninsula struggling with a weakened agricultural system and an economy dependent on Japan.
After Japan’s defeat in World War II, Korea was liberated in 1945. However, this newfound freedom came with its own set of challenges. The peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel into two zones of occupation, with the Soviet Union controlling the north and the United States occupying the south. This division set the stage for the creation of two separate Korean states: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) in the north, and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in the south. Both nations had vastly different political systems, economies, and ideologies, leading to a growing tension between the two that would ultimately culminate in the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950.
In the years leading up to the war, both North and South Korea were in a fragile state. The land was still reeling from the effects of the Japanese occupation, and the infrastructure was damaged and underdeveloped. The North, under the leadership of Kim Il-sung, began implementing communist policies and land reforms that were intended to restructure the economy. Meanwhile, the South, under the leadership of Syngman Rhee, leaned toward a more capitalist and democratic system.
