Synopsis

Reading Habit unveils the transformative power of daily reading as a science-backed tool for sharpening the mind, easing stress, and fostering lifelong intellectual growth. Blending neuroscience, psychology, and cultural analysis, the book positions reading not as a passive pastime but as an active mental workout that reshapes brain structure and emotional resilience. Through interdisciplinary research, it reveals how sustained reading habits strengthen neural connectivity, reduce cortisol levels by 68% within minutes, and slow cognitive decline—a compelling case for treating books as essential self-care tools in our screen-saturated world.

The book stands out by merging evolutionary context with modern data, showing how reading’s flow state immersion counters digital-age stressors like information overload. It contrasts the fragmented focus demanded by social media with reading’s unique ability to synchronize brain regions linked to empathy, critical thinking, and imagination. Practical strategies—like micro-reading sessions and genre rotation—help readers overcome time constraints while maintaining neuroplasticity. Unlike generic self-help guides, it acknowledges reading’s limits but argues convincingly for its role as a cognitive investment with compounding benefits, from enhanced problem-solving skills to greater cultural empathy.

Written in accessible prose free of jargon, Reading Habit progresses from historical roots to actionable techniques, offering a roadmap to rebuild attention spans and curiosity. Its value lies in synthesizing decades of research into a cohesive argument: that this ancient practice remains one of humanity’s most potent tools for psychological well-being in modern life.

In the years after World War II, a remarkable crime unfolded across continents—one that stunned scientists, baffled investigators, and exposed the vulnerability of institutions built on trust.

Thousands of rare butterfly specimens vanished from Australia’s leading natural history museums. The thefts were precise and selective, with no forced entry or alarms triggered. The missing items were irreplaceable reference specimens used to identify and classify species—valuable not for money, but for knowledge.

As the scale of the losses became clear, authorities faced an unsettling truth: this was no ordinary crime. The thief had insider knowledge, understanding exactly what to take and how to move undetected through trusted institutions.

The investigation drew in New Scotland Yard and leading entomologists, eventually focusing on an unlikely suspect—a refined British gentleman whose life defied simple explanation. Soldier, athlete, artist, collector, and amateur scientist, he navigated academic circles while secretly building one of the most controversial private collections ever uncovered.

But who was he really? A criminal driven by greed, or an obsessive collector convinced he was preserving what others neglected? Where does passion end and fraud begin?

Drawing on archival records, investigative files, and scientific correspondence, The Audacious Butterfly Thief reconstructs a true story of obsession, deception, and one of the most sophisticated museum thefts in history. It explores how the crime was carried out, why it remained hidden for so long, and what its consequences meant for science worldwide.

Both a gripping investigation and a reflection on ethics and trust, this book reveals how a crime without violence left lasting gaps in the historical record—and forced museums to rethink how knowledge is protected.

The risk of nuclear conflict today is at its highest point in decades. Geopolitical tensions are on the rise, and we are witnessing an unsettling increase in reckless nuclear threats and the use of nuclear blackmail. This has made the long-standing taboo against the use of nuclear weapons appear more fragile than ever before. In 2022, the famous Doomsday Clock was set to a chilling 90 seconds to midnight, marking the closest it has ever been since its inception in 1947. This unsettling moment in history underscores just how vulnerable the world has become to the catastrophic consequences of nuclear war.
In this fragile and precarious situation, it becomes even more crucial for the global community to fully grasp the profound humanitarian impact that any use of nuclear weapons would have. Whether in the case of a limited strike or a full-scale nuclear conflict, the consequences would be devastating not just for the immediate areas affected but for all of humanity and the environment. The environmental destruction, the loss of life, and the lasting psychological and societal trauma would ripple across borders, affecting every nation.
Greater awareness and a deeper understanding of these consequences are vital for mobilizing the global community to take decisive, collective action. Only through a heightened sense of urgency and responsibility can we work together to prevent the use of nuclear weapons. This awareness is also the key to advancing the cause of nuclear disarmament. Moving away from a security model based on the dangerous idea of mutually assured destruction and toward one focused on cooperation, diplomacy, and peace is not just desirable—it’s essential for ensuring the survival of humanity and the planet for future generations.

The Scheme - How the Right Wing...

Following his book Captured on corporate capture of regulatory and government agencies, and his years of experience as a prosecutor, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse here turns his attention to the right-wing scheme to capture the courts, and how it influenced the Trump administration's appointment of over 230 "business-friendly" judges, including the last three justices of the United States Supreme Court.

Whitehouse traces the motive to control the court system back to Lewis Powell's notorious memo, which gave a road map for corporate influence to target the judiciary, and chronicles a hidden-money campaign using an armada of front groups and helped by the infamous Citizens United Supreme Court decision. The scheme utilized the Federalist Society as an appointments turnstile, spent secret millions to support the nominees, orchestrated an "amicus brief" signaling apparatus, and propped up front-group litigants to "fast-lane" strategic test cases to the friendly justices.

Whitehouse finds the same small handful of right-wing billionaires and corporations running operations that he likens to "covert ops," ultimately enticing the Senate to break rules, norms, and precedents to confirm wildly inappropriate nominees who would advance the anti-government agenda of a small number of corporate oligarchs.

Perhaps not surprisingly given how advanced they were in comparison to contemporaries, the Egyptians invented one of the first writing systems ever, and for centuries, people thought these ancient texts held some sort of secret, be it aliens, advanced technology lost to the world, or mystical cures for all of the world’s ills. Even the ancient Egyptians saw their writing systems as full of mystery and hidden knowledge - according to Egyptian mythology, writing was invented by the ibis-headed god Thoth, the most intellectual of the gods.
Along with Egypt, the cultural and geographic region known as Mesopotamia was home to some of the world’s earliest civilizations and also the first known form of writing, cuneiform. Many different ethnic groups vied for power in ancient Mesopotamia over the course of antiquity, spanning about 3,000 years, and many of them spoke different languages. Despite these differences, the people in Mesopotamia shared many cultural attributes, including similar religious practices, a common art and architecture style, and a shared use of the cuneiform script. The languages spoken by the peoples of Mesopotamia were as diverse as the many ethnic groups, but as those groups asserted their military, economic, and cultural power over the other groups, two languages became dominant in the region: Sumerian and Akkadian.
The greatest irony of the lack of primary source information about the Phoenicians is that their language and writing happened to be the most influential in antiquity, a byproduct of their voyages and colonization, which spread their language across the Mediterranean. It was the forerunner to the Greek alphabet, from which the Latin alphabet was directly derived, and thus most of the written languages of the modern West.
