Synopsis

Reading Break Benefits reveals how brief, intentional reading sessions can transform mental well-being in our distraction-filled world. Challenging the notion that personal growth requires hours of effort, the book combines neuroscience and psychology to show how 5- to 15-minute reading intervals boost focus, creativity, and emotional resilience. Central to its thesis is the idea of reading as a “cognitive reset button”—activating neuroplasticity to rewire the brain while lowering stress hormones like cortisol. A striking 2022 study highlights nurses who reduced stress by 23% using 10-minute reading breaks, proving small investments yield outsized rewards.

The book stands out with its “dose-dependent reading” approach, tailoring sessions to specific goals: a 7-minute nonfiction snippet sharpens focus pre-meeting, while 15 minutes of fiction sparks creativity. It bridges disciplines, linking literary theory (how metaphors engage the brain) with behavioral economics (framing reading as high-return “time investments”). Structured in three parts, it moves from debunking productivity myths to actionable strategies like habit-stacking and curating “cognitive menus” of texts. Unlike generic self-help guides, it acknowledges modern attention spans while offering science-backed solutions—such as using narrative immersion to combat digital fatigue—making it ideal for busy professionals, students, or anyone seeking mental clarity without overhauling their routine.

Balancing research with practicality, the book pairs fMRI studies on brain connectivity with relatable examples, like Darwin’s daily novel-reading habit. Its emphasis on intentionality—showing how structured brevity enhances retention—addresses skeptics who argue fragmented reading harms comprehension. By reframing reading as modular self-care, it turns stolen moments into tools for a richer, more resilient mind.

Bede's Ecclesiastical History of England is a work in Latin by Bede on the history of the Christian Churches in England, and of England generally; its main focus is on the conflict between Roman and Celtic Christianity. It is considered to be one of the most important original references on Anglo-Saxon history. It is believed to have been completed in 731, when Bede was approximately 59 years old. Divided into five books, it covers the history of England, ecclesiastical and political, from the time of Julius Caesar to the date of its completion (731).

The History of the English Church and People has a clear polemical and didactic purpose. Bede sets out, not just to tell the story of the English, but to advance his views on politics and religion. In political terms he is a partisan of his native Northumbria, amplifying its role in English history over and above that of Mercia, its great southern rival. While Bede is loyal to Northumbria, he shows an even greater attachment to the Irish and the Irish Celtic missionaries, whom he considers to be far more effective and dedicated than their rather complacent English counterparts. His final preoccupation is over the precise date of Easter, which he writes about at length. It is here, and only here, that he ventures some criticism of St Cuthbert and the Irish missionaries, who celebrated the event, according to Bede, at the wrong time. In the end he is pleased to note that the Irish Church was saved from error by accepting the correct date for Easter. (Summary modified from Wikipedia)

Russell discusses how governments and institutions use propaganda to shape the beliefs and actions of citizens. He argues that propaganda is often used to create a sense of unity and to suppress dissent, rather than to inform and educate the public. This can lead to a situation where people are unwilling or unable to question the status quo, which can be detrimental to the progress of society. Overall, "Free Thought and Official Propaganda" is a powerful critique of the use of propaganda in society and a passionate defence of free thought. It remains a relevant and thought-provoking essay in today's world, where propaganda and the manipulation of information continue to be pressing issues. Read in English, unabridged.

Written with the indelible power of Girl, Interrupted, Brain on Fire, and Reasons to Stay Alive, a lyrical, poignant memoir by a young woman about her childhood battle with debilitating obsessive compulsive disorder, and her hard-won journey to recovery.
By the age of thirteen, Lily Bailey was convinced she was bad. She had killed someone with a thought, spread untold disease, and ogled the bodies of other children. Only by performing an exhausting series of secret routines could she make up for what she’d done. But no matter how intricate or repetitive, no act of penance was ever enough.
Beautifully written and astonishingly intimate, Because We Are Bad recounts a childhood consumed by obsessive compulsive disorder. As a child, Bailey created a second personality inside herself—""I"" became ""we""—to help manifest compulsions that drove every minute of every day of her young life. Now she writes about the forces beneath her skin, and how they ordered, organized, and urged her forward. Lily charts her journey, from checking on her younger sister dozens of times a night, to ""normalizing"" herself at school among new friends as she grew older, and finally to her young adult years, learning—indeed, breaking through—to make a way for herself in a big, wide world that refuses to stay in check.
Charming and raw, harrowing and redemptive, Because We Are Bad is an illuminating and uplifting look into the mind and soul of an extraordinary young woman, and a startling portrait of OCD that allows us to see and understand this condition as never before.

    The Attack on Taranto -...

On November 11, 1940, 21 slow, canvas-covered British warplanes, launched from the carrier Illustrious, attacked the harbor at the Italian port of Taranto and put most of the Italian navy out of commission. This all-but-forgotten operation, the authors argue, deserves historical recognition as an inspirational precedent for the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor 13 months later. Taranto demonstrated that battleships in a shallow, heavily defended harbor could be sunk by a handful of torpedo-bombers. That lesson Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto, commander-in-chief of the Japanese fleet, learned well-while the American military virtually ignored it.   “By this single stroke the balance of naval power in the Mediterranean was decisively altered.” –Winston S. Churchill
