  The financial institution that brought diamond and gold magnate Cecil John Rhodes and Sir Lewis Michell together – the Standard Bank – was at the heart of the country's rapid transformation from an agricultural backwater to an industrial powerhouse thanks to the discovery of diamonds and gold. The book chronicles the activities and growth of the bank under the remarkable stewardship of Michell and recounts his role as the trusted confidant of Rhodes.
  Michell published the first biography of Rhodes to be written after his death and offers many intriguing insights into the character and motives of one of the most controversial and self-driven of British imperialists.   Otto von Bismarck, the leading German statesman of the 19th century, once joked, “There is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children, and the US of America.” He said this not because the Americans were a great concern for him - his main interest in the US was trade -, but as the architect of the first unified German state, he was setting the tone for what two generations of German nationals would feel about America’s apparent invulnerability. It would always be better, thus, to keep America away from Germany's business. 
  Nonetheless, during the two major wars of the 20th century, America and Germany did indeed clash against each other, and in both cases, American entry into the war was a decisive factor in the defeat of the Germans. Germany had a good reason for desiring the non-interference of the American colossus: with a declining British Empire, and the rest of Europe mired in a diplomatic labyrinth, America seemed to be the only nation with the capacity to tip the scales in a major war. 
  On both occasions, Germany hoped to wage a proxy war against an undeclared enemy. In World War I, Germany planned an invasion from Mexico not once but on several occasions, one of them with a formal invitation to the president of Mexico to lead it. This would have been a German-Mexican coalition that, if successful, would have rewarded Mexico with part of the territories lost in 1847, namely Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. To be sure, the Kaiser knew that Mexico had no chance of winning that war, even with German aid, nor of regaining its lost territory, but the German Empire did not really care about Mexico, nor was expecting a Mexican victory. Germany only needed to buy more time, enough to defeat America’s European allies so that when the US succeeded in subduing the Mexicans, it would have to negotiate with a victorious Germany.

  From Gaelic, the words Sinn Féin translate loosely into English as “We Ourselves,” or “Ourselves Alone.” The implications of this are that Ireland, historically subject to the political domination of England, could look to none but itself for liberation. 
  	By the 18th century, the Irish Parliament and all of the institutions of the state were dominated by Protestants, with Catholics almost entirely excluded. In 1798, a rebellion was launched by the “United Irishmen,” one of the first underground nationalist Republican organizations with the stated objective of overthrowing English rule and replacing it with an Irish republic based on the precepts of the recent French Revolution. The rebellion failed, but the English response was to dissolve the Irish Parliament and integrate Ireland directly into the United Kingdom. Ireland then became integral to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland which was ruled directly from Whitehall under the terms of the 1800 Act of Union. A certain number of Irish members were granted seats in the Parliament of Westminster, and, for all intents and purposes, Ireland existed as a province of the United Kingdom. 
  	Thereafter, the tone of Irish political dialogue shifted somewhat, with the objective of moderate Irish nationalists no longer absolute independence from England, but the restoration of an Irish Parliament and a degree of self-government while remaining on some level a dependency of the British Empire. The two signature names in this process were Daniel O’Connell, Member of the Westminster Parliament who campaigned on a platform of repealing the Act of Union, and Charles Stewart Parnell, also a member of the British Parliament, who, between 1880 and 1891, called for “Home Rule.”
