Beschreibung

Loneliness Insights reframes loneliness as a modern public health emergency, blending cutting-edge psychology and sociology to reveal how isolation reshapes both bodies and societies. The book argues that loneliness transcends personal experience, driving systemic risks like cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and premature mortality—effects as deadly as smoking. Paradoxically, these dangers surge in our hyper-connected age, fueled by vanishing community spaces, remote work trends, and aging populations. Through landmark studies like the US Health and Retirement Survey, the authors show how social isolation’s biological toll mirrors physical pain in brain scans, while sociological data exposes how marginalized groups face compounded risks due to structural inequities.

Structured in three clear sections, the book moves from defining loneliness’s physiological roots to analyzing societal triggers like urban design flaws and policy failures. A striking case study explores Japan’s kodokushi (lonely deaths), linking rigid work cultures and aging demographics to extreme isolation. Solutions emphasize scalability: Finland’s national loneliness strategy and community time banks model systemic change, while neuroimaging validates social prescribing—doctors recommending group activities as treatment. The research synthesizes smartphone interaction data, ethnographic narratives, and global health metrics, balancing academic rigor with relatable stories of isolated seniors and gig workers.

What sets Loneliness Insights apart is its dual focus on individual and institutional responsibility. It rejects simplistic self-help tropes, instead advocating policy reforms and inclusive urban planning alongside personal resilience. By framing loneliness as a mirror of societal health, the book offers a roadmap for rebuilding human connection—one community space, workplace policy, and clinical intervention at a time.

The evolutionary path from the original primates to modern man is a long one and has taken many twists and turns, but naturally, as the fossil record grows, scientists gain a more complete understanding of our own mental and physical history in terms of genetics and anatomy. However, the correct order and relationships of the various specimen types are difficult to pin down. Many representative samples have been found in such minute amounts as to not preclude anomalies. They have been discovered in various stages of wear. Modern features did not occur simultaneously or uniformly, taking millions of years to become manifest in later types. Up to the present day’s Homo sapiens, examples of the main types have been hybrids of older and more modern features.
One of the earliest species of the genus Homo to be discovered is Homo habilis, which basically means “handy man.” The name comes from the belief at the time of its discovery that this species was the first to start using stone tools. The first fossils to be uncovered in Olduvai Gorge were from the same stratigraphic layer as simple stone tools. Fossils of the crania and postcranial skeleton for this species have been found in both eastern and southern Africa and date to around 2.5–1.6 million years ago.
Given the gradual changes that take place in evolution, Homo habilis shares a number of characteristics that are similar to the genus Australopithecus, such as in the postcranial elements. That said, the size and shape of the Homo habilis skull are markedly different. The size of the brain is much larger relative to the size of the body, being around 680 cc. In order to house a larger brain, the skull features a more vertical frontal bone, creating a more vertical forehead. The brow ridges that sit on the lower portion of the frontal bone are also reduced in size.

    The Promise of Youth...

When inclusion into the fold of citizenship is conditioned by a social group's conceit to ritual violence, humiliation, and exploitation, what can anti-citizenship offer us?

The Promise of Youth Anti-citizenship argues that Black youth and youth of color have been cast as anti-citizens, disenfranchised from the social, political, and economic mainstream of American life. Instead of asking youth to conform to a larger societal structure undergirded by racial capitalism and antiblackness, the volume's contributors propose that the collective practice of anti-citizenship opens up a liberatory space for youth to challenge the social order.

The chapters cover an array of topics, including Black youth in the charter school experiment in post-Katrina New Orleans; racial capitalism, the queering of ethnicity, and the 1980s Salvadoran migration to South Central Los Angeles; the notion of decolonizing classrooms through Palestinian liberation narratives; and more. Through a range of methodological approaches and conceptual interventions, this collection illuminates how youth negotiate and exercise anti-citizenship as forms of either resistance or refusal in response to coercive patriotism, cultural imperialism, and predatory capitalism.
