Synopsis

Emotional Regulation Tactics offers a science-backed guide to transforming overwhelming emotions into resilience, blending neurobiology with practical strategies. Central to its approach is demystifying how the brain’s amygdala triggers fight-or-flight responses and how the prefrontal cortex can be trained to regain control—a dynamic the book likens to "recalibrating mental smoke alarms." Unlike generic self-help guides, it grounds techniques like cognitive reappraisal and mindfulness-based stress reduction in decades of research, showing readers how to rewire neural pathways through deliberate practice. The book challenges the myth that emotional stability is innate, positioning it instead as a skill anyone can develop with tools like the crisis-tested STOP method (Stop, Breathe, Observe, Proceed).

Structured as a three-part journey, the text progresses from explaining the science of emotions to teaching immediate interventions and long-term resilience habits. Case studies and exercises—such as emotion-tracking journals—bridge theory and daily life, while addressing critiques (e.g., mindfulness as a superficial fix) adds nuance. What sets it apart is its balance of accessibility and rigor: complex concepts like distress tolerance are distilled into relatable analogies, avoiding jargon without oversimplifying.

By integrating insights from cognitive-behavioral therapy, social psychology, and neuroimaging studies, the book equips readers to navigate stress, reframe triggers, and adapt strategies across cultural contexts. It acknowledges systemic stressors but focuses on actionable personal agency, making it ideal for overwhelmed professionals, caregivers, or anyone seeking to harness emotional energy for growth.

The Chuang Tsu is one of the most important books in Chinese literature and philosophy. It is one of the two foundational texts of Daoism. Also titled Zhuangzi, it is a commentary and extension of the Dao de Jing/Tao Te Ching, in the same way that Mencius' Analects are an exploration of Confucius' thought. Written in around 300BCE during the Warring States period, it is a collection of anecdotes, fables, and stories that are as silly and funny as they are profound and thought provoking.Where the Dao De Jing is a distilled and poetic exploration of the Way, Zhuangi takes a much more human and real-world path through the mysteries of the Dao. Using often humorous anecdotes, allegories, parables and fables mixed with conversations about particular aspects of the Way.James Legge’s translation is perhaps the most sophisticated and exacting one in existence. It carries as much as possible of the subtlety and detail in the original masterwork. It is regarded as one of the greatest literary works in all of Chinese history, and has been called "the most important pre-Qin text for the study of Chinese literature." Its main themes are of spontaneity in action and of freedom from the human world and its conventions. The fables and anecdotes in the text illustrate the illusion of distinctions between good and bad, large and small, life and death, and human and nature. While other ancient Chinese philosophers focused on moral and personal duty, Zhuangzi promoted carefree wandering and becoming one with "the Way" (Dào 道) by following nature. It has influenced great Chinese and Western writers for more than 2000 years, including Oscar Wilde, Yeats, Nietzsche, Sima Xiangru, Li Bai, Su Shi and Lu You.

During the 15th century, China had become economically and technologically advanced compared to civilizations in Europe at the time, and its fleet, which had reached a total of 3,500 ships, was unmatched by any other world power. Nevertheless, after conducting several trade expeditions with the massive fleet, the Chinese ships were either burned in the docks or left to rot. With that, China began to revert to the xenophobic policies of its past and reduce its presence in other lands. By 1525, the largest naval fleet in the world had essentially been destroyed or dismantled by China itself.
While China was in the process of isolating itself from the rest of the world, the European explorers were beginning to discover new lands, such as North America and South America. Among the countries doing the most exploring during this time were the Portuguese. The Portuguese had reached India in 1498, and by 1509 they had established part of their empire in India. This allowed the Portuguese to have a base of operations to further expand east into Asia. In 1511, the Portuguese captured the large spice trading center of Malacca in Malaysia, and like their base in India, Malacca allowed the Portuguese to have a foothold, thereby providing access to China and Southeast Asia.
The location of Macau was beneficial and strategically chosen by the Portuguese, as it was in close communication with Guangzhou and connected via a river system. In contrast to their earlier dealings with the Chinese, the Portuguese attempted to appear more humble and comply with the wishes of the Chinese rather than with force. As it turned out, the policy, in conjunction with increased European activities in the region, would help the Portuguese Empire hold on to Macau even as its fortunes dwindled everywhere else across the world.

We are in the midst of the worst drug crisis in American history. What are we going to do about it?Around 100,000 Americans died of a drug overdose last year—nearly double the number who died in Vietnam. More than 1,000,000 have perished since 2000, thanks largely to an explosion of fentanyl and other addictive opioids. But fentanyl, abundant methamphetamine, and other lethal drugs are not the only things that are killing us: our policy is. So far, America has lacked the will to do better. That must change, and this book tells us how.No one is immune, which is why Kevin Sabet has authored this remarkable book. Sabet, dubbed the "the quarterback of the new anti-drug movement" by Salon, has spent most of his life battling the destructive effects of drugs. In One Nation Under the Influence, he asks hard questions and provides clear answers, taking listeners from the streets of San Francisco and New York to the southern border, up to Canada, and across to Europe to show how we can chart a necessary way forward. The solutions are out there, if only we have the will to apply them.
