  The Propagandists' Playbook peels back the layers of the right-wing media manipulation machine to reveal why its strategies are so effective and pervasive, while also humanizing the people whose worldviews and media practices conservatism embodies. Based on interviews and ethnographic observations of two Republican groups over the course of the 2018 Virginia gubernatorial race—including the author's firsthand experience of the 2017 Unite the Right rally—the book considers how Google algorithms, YouTube playlists, pundits, and politicians can manipulate audiences, reaffirm beliefs, and expose audiences to more extremist ideas, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. Francesca Tripodi argues that conservatives who embody the Christian worldview give authoritative weight to original texts and interrogate the media using the same tools taught to them in Bible study—for example, using Google to "fact check" the news. The result of this practice, tied to conservative marketing tactics, is more than a reaffirmation of existing beliefs: it is a radicalization of content and a changing of narratives adopted by the media.   Vanzetti nacque a Villafalletto, in provincia di Cuneo, l'11 giugno del 1888, primogenito dei quattro figli di Giovanna Nivello (1862-1907) e Giovanni Battista Vanzetti (1849-1931), modesto proprietario terriero e gestore di una piccola caffetteria. Pur non vivendo in ristrettezze economiche, a spingerlo a emigrare negli Stati Uniti d'America furono soprattutto l'improvvisa e tragica morte dell'amata madre, che lo portò quasi alla follia, e probabilmente una consuetudine familiare (anche il padre era stato emigrante per un breve periodo, dal 1881 al 1883 in California). Fece molti lavori, accettando tutto ciò che gli capitava. Lavorò in varie trattorie, in una cava, in un'acciaieria e in una fabbrica di cordami, la Plymouth Cordage Company. Spirito libero e indipendente, era un avido lettore soprattutto delle opere di Marx, Darwin, Hugo, Gorkij, Tolstoj, Zola e Dante. Nel 1916 guidò uno sciopero contro la Plymouth e per questo motivo nessuno volle più dargli un lavoro. Più tardi, nel 1919, si mise in proprio facendo il pescivendolo fino al momento dell'arresto.

  War and conflict never occur 'in a vacuum,' as there are always signallers and events that indicate and then dictate the onset of an upheaval. This has been true of relatively minor conflicts such as the Japan – Russo War of (1904 – 1905), the Vietnam War (1963 – 1975), the Afghanistan War (2001 – ongoing) and the major 'total wars' of World War One (1914 – 1918); and World War Two (1939 – 1945). There is a new and emerging war that is about to happen and its epicentre will be in the Asia-Pacific, and more specifically, the historic, contemporary and emerging issues associated with China – Taiwan tensions are a continuum; and show no sign of abatement or downward-moderation. The signals are there and they consist of but are not limited to, the historic baggage of China's 'ownership' of Taiwan; of this factor being rejected by consecutive governments of Taiwan; China's increasing sclerotic (irredentist) demands and policies toward Taiwan; the steadfastness of Taiwan's attempts at recognition as an independent cum sovereign entity; other Asia-Pacific and international actors attempting to intervene in the region; and the uncertainties associated with who will help defend Taiwan. All are signals. Within them there is and remains a continuous rise in tensions of which – and is held within the title of this book – remains the 'tipping point' of 2036. There are many reasons for this date to be used as a pivot point and they are explored in detail in the lead up to this date, and whilst the outcome is due to current machinations not subsiding (and will only continue to deteriorate), the contention is and remains not whether a war will occur, but when. The magnitude of the war that will take place demands the inherent complexities be considered, understood and explored in detail. This book is a significant step in that direction.

  In 1991, Peggy Adler, author of Trilogy: Three True Stories of Scoundrels and Schemers, was retained by self-proclaimed CIA agent, arms dealer and money launderer, Richard Brenneke, to co-author his autobiography. She soon discovered evidence in his files contradicting claims regarding his presence at October Surprise conspiracy meetings and went on to out Brenneke as a con artist in a February 1992 article in the Village Voice. Adler then researched a series of additional articles for the “Voice,” which went on to prove that the so-called “October Surprise” was a hoax.  
  In mid-1992, upon learning that the United States House of Representatives had created a Task Force to Investigate Certain Allegations Concerning the Holding of American Hostages by Iran in 1980, which would be investigating whether or not there actually had been an “October Surprise,” she turned over to them the seventy cartons of documents she’d hauled east from Brenneke’s home in Portland, Oregon, in order to write his memoirs. Subsequently, she worked as a consultant to the Task Force and assisted in drafting and editing the Brenneke section of their final report.  
  Chapter one of this book recounts the Brenneke story, from 1973 forward, including her own odyssey with this scoundrel. Chapter two reveals how Oliver North and Richard Secord’s Iran-Contra pal, Albert Hakim, was well aware that it was possible to get money out of a Swiss bank account without ever being a signatory—for he’d facilitated just that, years before. And Chapter three traces Roger Ailes’ relationship to the Willie Horton commercial that helped sink George Dukakis’ hope for the presidency. Additionally, the book is laden with all the necessary documentation to back up what Adler has written.
