  The Byzantine Empire existed for over a thousand years, with a history spanning from the division of the Roman Empire in 395 until the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. It was formed from the previous Eastern Roman Empire, and during its long existence, the Byzantine inhabitants were very proud to call themselves Romans.  
  	However, many things changed during the long lifespan of the Byzantine Empire, starting with its Hellenization in the 6th century. The use of the Latin language diminished and Greek took its place, while the typical Roman culture gave way to a more Hellenistic one. The Hellenization of Byzantium was detrimental to the relationship with the Holy Roman Empire, and the Christian world from that point would be split in two. The subsequent strengthening of the Orthodox Church caused many civil wars and conflicts to arise during the centuries, which shattered and reshaped the territory time after time. By the end of the Byzantine Empire’s existence, the old age had weakened both the state and church, making it an easy target for invading forces.  
  	The most notable invaders were the the Turkish-speaking Seljuks, led through a series of battles by Kutalmishouglu Suleiman, who supported different usurpers against the Byzantine emperor. The expansion of the Seljuks was so successful that when Suleiman died, he had put all of Bithynia under his control as well as several important harbor towns along the shores on the Asian side of Bosphorus. With that accomplishment, he had managed to separate the Byzantines living in Anatolia from their emperor in Constantinople. This immediately weakened the unity of the Byzantine Empire.

  At its core, manipulation is about exerting influence in a way that is not immediately obvious to the target. Unlike more overt forms of control, manipulation operates in the shadows, using psychological tactics to induce desired behaviors or responses. It thrives on exploiting vulnerabilities, uncertainties, and emotional triggers in individuals, often capitalizing on their desires, fears, or insecurities. Manipulators may use a variety of techniques, such as flattery, guilt-tripping, emotional blackmail, and gaslighting, to sway decisions or actions in their favor. 
  One of the defining characteristics of manipulation is its covert nature. The manipulator often works behind the scenes, creating situations or presenting information in a way that influences the target’s perception of reality. This can lead the victim to make decisions they would not otherwise have made, under the false belief that they are acting independently or in their own best interest. For instance, a manipulative partner may use guilt to convince their significant other to compromise on something they would normally resist. Over time, these manipulative tactics can erode the target's sense of agency and self-worth, making them more susceptible to future manipulation.

  Excessive control is a form of domination in which one individual or entity seeks to regulate another’s thoughts, actions, and decisions to an unhealthy degree. While some level of structure and guidance is necessary in various aspects of life, such as in parenting, leadership, and governance, excessive control crosses the line into coercion, manipulation, and restriction of personal freedom. This type of control can occur in different settings, including personal relationships, workplaces, political systems, and even media influence. 
  At its core, excessive control is often driven by fear, insecurity, or the desire for power. Those who exert extreme control may believe that they are acting in the best interest of others, while in reality, they strip individuals of autonomy and self-determination. This behavior can manifest in different ways, such as micromanaging, imposing rigid rules, discouraging independent thinking, or using emotional, psychological, or even physical tactics to ensure compliance. Over time, the person being controlled may experience anxiety, self-doubt, and a loss of confidence in their ability to make choices. 
  In personal relationships, excessive control can take the form of possessiveness, constant monitoring, and manipulation. A controlling partner may demand to know every detail of the other person’s life, limit their interactions with others, or make decisions on their behalf. Similarly, in family settings, parents or guardians who exert too much control over their children may prevent them from developing independence, leading to long-term emotional and psychological struggles.
