Sinopsis

'Boring Things' explores a fascinating modern paradox: why are today's youth experiencing unprecedented levels of boredom despite having access to endless digital entertainment? This compelling examination delves into the neurological, social, and technological factors behind this phenomenon, revealing how constant digital stimulation may actually be diminishing our capacity for deep engagement.

The book progresses through three illuminating sections, beginning with an exploration of how digital stimulation affects dopamine receptors in developing brains. Through detailed research and case studies, it demonstrates that 67% of teenagers report frequent boredom despite having countless entertainment options at their fingertips. The analysis then moves into historical comparisons of youth engagement patterns and concludes with a thorough examination of technology's role in modern boredom.

What sets this work apart is its comprehensive approach to understanding boredom not as a personal failing, but as a systemic issue requiring multi-level intervention. Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, and social studies, the book offers practical frameworks and evidence-based solutions for parents, educators, and mental health professionals. It presents these complex concepts in accessible language while maintaining academic rigor, making it an invaluable resource for anyone interested in youth development in the digital age.

Among the figures of early Roman history, few stand out quite like Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a man who to his contemporaries stood as the very image of the Roman Vir Bous (the Good Man). His life, whether viewed through the lens of ancient writers or treated as something of a foundational myth, has shaped Western thought surrounding civic duty and the restraint of power for more than 2,000 years.
Cincinnatus lived during the precarious infancy of the Roman Republic, a time when the people had recently overthrown the monarchy and created a new system designed to balance power between competing interests. Naturally, the fear of an oppressive or incompetent monarchy had not yet fully diminished, and to make things worse, the period was plagued by the existential threat of invasions at the hands of neighboring Italic tribes. Internally, the Republic was not entirely stable, because its institutions were still in a process of evolution and social tensions between the patrician elite and the plebeian population often resulted in disorder. At any moment, the pressure might have forced the Republic itself to collapse.
Despite the tensions, or because of them, it was within this atmosphere of uncertainty that the core ideals of Rome started to take shape: personal sacrifice, duty to the state, and an unwavering commitment to the common good. These are the very traits that Cincinnatus came to embody as a citizen-soldier who took up arms in defense of the state, and once the danger had passed, he returned without complaint to his modest life. In the 5th century BCE, he is described as toiling away on a small plot of land after a series of personal misfortunes drew him away from public life, and it was from this setting that he was summoned when a great crisis struck Rome. The Republic, left with no other option, turned to Cincinnatus and appointed him dictator.

Crimes against History takes a global approach to the extreme forms of censorship to which history and historians have been subjected through the ages.

The book opens by considering the varieties of censorship, from suppression, dismissal, and defamation to persecution and murder. Part I, "Kill switch," tells the tragic story of how the censorship of history has sometimes turned into deadly crimes against history, with chapters looking at topics such as historians and archivists being killed for political reasons, attacks by political leaders on historians, iconoclastic breaks with the past, and fake news. Part II, "Fragile freedom," reverses the perspective and examines how the censorship of history has backfired. Chapters consider the subversive power of historical analogies and resistance to the censorship of history. The book also contains a "Provisional memorial for history producers killed for political reasons (from ancient times until 2017)". It is a double tribute: to the history producers who were killed and to those who mustered the courage to resist the blows of censorship.
