Summary

'Big Brain Gains' explores the cutting-edge intersection of neuroscience and human cognitive enhancement, offering a comprehensive examination of how modern technology and scientific understanding are revolutionizing our approach to brain optimization. The book masterfully weaves together three crucial domains: brain-computer interfaces, neuroplasticity, and evidence-based cognitive enhancement protocols, presenting complex neuroscience concepts in an accessible manner for both professionals and enthusiastic learners.Drawing from twenty years of global research, the book progresses logically from fundamental principles of neural plasticity to advanced applications of neural interface technology. It presents fascinating insights into how targeted neurological interventions can measurably improve cognitive capabilities, supported by data from clinical trials and neuroimaging studies. The interdisciplinary approach effectively bridges neuroscience, computer science, and psychology, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of cognitive enhancement possibilities. The narrative structure moves thoughtfully from theoretical foundations to practical applications, making it particularly valuable for readers seeking evidence-based methods for mental enhancement.Whether exploring the mechanics of brain-computer interfaces or examining specific cognitive training protocols, the book maintains a balanced perspective while addressing crucial debates in the field, including ethical considerations and long-term effects of neural enhancement technologies. Throughout, readers are equipped with implementable strategies based on current scientific understanding, making complex concepts actionable in real-world contexts.

In the nineteenth century, Manhattan's streets were so choked with pedestrians, horses, vehicles, and vendors that a trip from City Hall to Central Park could take hours. Alfred Beach had the perfect solution: build a giant pneumatic tube underneath Broadway from the Battery to Harlem. Air pressure would shoot passengers up and down the island in clean, quiet carriages. But Beach was up against the operators of the horse-drawn streetcars and the politicians in their pay, most conspicuously William M. Tweed, the notorious "Boss" of Tammany Hall.New York's Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit tells a classic story of good versus evil, pitting the mild-mannered Beach, a visionary inventor and entrepreneur, against the oafish tyrant Tweed, the exemplar of corruption in the Gilded Age. It also tells the story of one of the most astonishing feats of engineering in American history, the surreptitious creation of the nation's first operational subway. Unfortunately, political lethargy and greed would conspire to deny the city a subway for another thirty years. Yet Alfred Beach still proved conclusively the feasibility of underground railways in Manhattan, and paved the way for modern mass transportation systems. Although this true story took place more than a century ago, it will at times sound surprisingly familiar.

Companies today are moving rapidly to integrate generative AI into their products and services. But there's a great deal of hype (and misunderstanding) about the impact and promise of this technology. With this book, Chris Fregly, Antje Barth, and Shelbee Eigenbrode from AWS help CTOs, ML practitioners, application developers, business analysts, data engineers, and data scientists find practical ways to use this exciting new technology.

You'll learn the generative AI project life cycle including use case definition, model selection, model fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation, reinforcement learning from human feedback, and model quantization, optimization, and deployment. And you'll explore different types of models including large language models (LLMs) and multimodal models such as Stable Diffusion for generating images and Flamingo/IDEFICS for answering questions about images.

You'll also discover how to apply generative AI to your business use cases; determine which generative AI models are best suited to your task; perform prompt engineering and in-context learning; fine-tune generative AI models on your datasets with low-rank adaptation (LoRA); align generative AI models to human values with reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF); augment your model with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG); explore libraries such as LangChain and ReAct to develop agents and actions; and build generative AI applications with Amazon Bedrock.

What is a meteor or meteorite? A meteor is a small body of matter apparently from outer space that upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere resembles a streak of light, what we normally call falling stars. A meteorite is one of these that successfully hits the ground and sometimes other things, including people, buildings and animals!
Until 1803 most scientists regarded falls of meteorites as absurd and fantastical. As well as impossible. This was until the massive fall onto L’Aigle in France of thousands of meteorites on April 23rd 1803. Previously on November 11th 1799 there had also been a massive meteor shower comprising thousands of meteors that was seen all over the Earth. This is now known to be the Leonid meteors whose falls have diminished since. The Leonids come around every November, usually near the beginning of the month. Funny how this is a peak period for UFO sightings! That was accepted meteorites. Then you have such things as Black Comets. Black comets are extinct cometary nuclei which no longer create outgassing. No tail is visible. They are black and difficult to see in space unless they are passing celestial bodies. Even these seem apparently normal when you look at everything that has come crashing down, sometimes heavily and sometimes lightly, from the skies. Amongst the true meteorites and possible fragment of black comets, and possibly even antimatter, and even large blocks of ice, what then are the rest of these? That the majority of UFO sightings might actually be misidentified meteoric or cometary bodies. The list of incidents from the sky including numerous near misses. Are they meteors, comets or UFOs or a combination or misinterpretation of all of the above?
