Even as he grew up on the edge of Lewis, the vastness of Russia never felt too distant for Donald S Murray. Its great literary traditions were often discussed in his home village, while the political unrest and religious fervour that marked its past and present were occassionally reflected in his life on the island. Inspired by the Russian canon, the songs, verse and stories contained within these pages draw upon the experiences of his youth, shifting continually between myth and history, the absurd and moving, the satirical and everyday. Its extraordinary and diverse narratives underline the truth of its opening line: 'I can see these islands mirror Russia.'

Man of Distinction by Michael Shaara - Being unique is a matter of pride—but being a complete mathematical impossibility?
The remarkable distinction of Thatcher Blitt did not come to the attention of a bemused world until late in the year 2180. Although Thatcher Blitt was, by the standards of his time, an extremely successful man financially, this was not considered real distinction. Unfortunately for Blitt, it never has been.
The history books do not record the names of the most successful merchants of the past unless they happened by chance to have been connected with famous men of the time. Thus Croesus is remembered largely for his contributions to famous Romans and successful armies. And Haym Solomon, a similarly wealthy man, would have been long forgotten had he not also been a financial mainstay of the American Revolution and consorted with famous, if impoverished, statesmen.
So if Thatcher Blitt was distinct among men, the distinction was not immediately apparent. He was a small, gaunt, fragile man who had the kind of face and bearing that are perfect for movie crowd scenes. Absolutely forgettable. Yet Thatcher Blitt was one of the foremost businessmen of his time. For he was president and founder of that noble institution, Genealogy, Inc.
Thatcher Blitt was not yet 25 when he made the discovery which was to make him among the richest men of his time. His discovery was, like all great ones, obvious yet profound. He observed that every person had a father.

“Bewitching! I was so into this series that I lost track of time… Everything was perfect – emotions, heartbreak, drama and long-lost memories.” Reader review, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1935. Kate Durrant is helping her mother move out of the little cottage her parents used to share, until her father’s heartbreaking death. Full of guilt that she couldn’t visit her dad in his last moments, Kate now has only memories for company. Memories and… something else. Since she was a small child, Kate has been able to see and feel the history of objects she touches. She’s always kept her gift secret, not knowing fully what it is, or how far it goes.

One evening, while visiting her father’s grave, Kate wanders into the shadowy woods behind the church. Following the mossy paths, she realises she’s lost her way just as she stumbles upon the wrought-iron gates of Hill House, home to the illustrious Mandeville family.

Welcomed in and offered a position on the staff as a housemaid, Kate discovers that all is not right within the walls of the splendid manor house. As her gift begins to unspool the history of the Mandeville’s home, she realises that an unspeakable tragedy is fated to befall the family heir. Kate also grows increasingly close to Bertie Morrison, the Estate Manager who has known Hill House his whole life. With the family oblivious to their desperate peril, Bertie helps Kate understand her deepening connection to the Mandevilles.

With Halloween approaching – when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest – a special visitor from the house’s past appears just as a shadow falls over Hill House.

The clock is ticking… will Kate's unique gift, combined with the strength of a new love and a timeless love from beyond the grave, be enough to save the Mandeville legacy?
