Sinossi

"End Life Dilemmas" tackles the complex intersection of medical technology, human dignity, and mortality in modern healthcare. This comprehensive work explores how society navigates end-of-life care through three critical lenses: assisted dying ethics, palliative care advancement, and patient autonomy. The book uniquely combines philosophical analysis with practical medical insights, offering readers a balanced perspective on how different healthcare systems and cultures approach death and dying. Through a carefully structured approach, the book progresses from historical context to contemporary challenges, examining real-world case studies and clinical evidence. It presents compelling insights into how various jurisdictions handle assisted dying legislation and reveals the evolution of palliative care techniques. The work stands out for its thorough examination of how medical decision-making intersects with cultural values, religious beliefs, and family dynamics, all while maintaining a focus on patient dignity and autonomy. The book's interdisciplinary approach makes it particularly valuable for both medical professionals and informed general readers, offering practical guidance alongside scholarly analysis. It addresses timely issues such as the impact of COVID-19 on end-of-life care and the role of artificial intelligence in medical decisions, while providing assessment tools and communication frameworks for healthcare providers. This balanced treatment of complex bioethical issues makes it an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the challenges of modern end-of-life care.

Narrated by Rebecca Bennett, this open access practical guide to reproductive ethics navigates the complex subject of the policy around IVF treatment and disability screening based on the concerns around the welfare of future children. It focuses on 3 questions in order to examine these often complex philosophical issues:
    · Should we allow prospective parents using IVF to implant an embryo with a condition considered to be a disability?
    · Is routine screening for Down syndrome in pregnancy ethically acceptable, even if there is evidence that individuals may feel pressure to accept this screening?
    · Are we justified in attempting to evaluate the potential parenting ability of those trying to access fertility treatment (e.g. disabled people or individuals with past criminal convictions) and prevent access in some cases?
Rebecca Bennett walks the listener through different answers to these questions, exploring issues such as whether it is ever morally wrong to reproduce, whether we have a moral obligation to try and bring the ‘best’ children we can into existence and how we can assess the quality of future lives. There is, of course, no consensus about what the ‘right’ answers are to these questions, however answers are needed.
This area of policy and regulation is one that, Bennett argues, is heavily influenced by intuition, social norms and bias. The Welfare of Future Children invites us to question these norms and to come to a position on these issues that emphasises reason, transparency and accountability.

Money laundering is as old as money itself – and yet the laws designed to prevent it are as ineffective as they ever have been.
Today's anti-money laundering (AML) regulations were designed to eliminate profits from drug trafficking and combat tax evasion, terrorism and the spread of weapons of mass destruction. However, the modern laws have done little to stop crime and have instead significantly increased the regulatory burden on legitimate businesses and consumers. As one banker at an AML conference quipped, 'This does not stop money laundering; it just enables those in the know to charge more.'
Indeed, AML laws have laid the foundations for massive and sophisticated criminal enterprise support services that help criminals evade detection.
How to Launder Money: A guide for law enforcement, prosecutors and policymakers offers a peek behind the veil to see the bent levers of finance and how they are pulled. It also examines how many who have pulled them, including one of the authors, have ended up behind bars. While acknowledging the challenges faced by law enforcement in a borderless world, it also provides concrete recommendations on how to reduce the crime associated with money laundering.
The criminals already know how to launder money; this is, in part, their inside story. This book is for the rest of us, who want to know how the laws that are supposed to protect us from crime are in reality doing more damage than ever before.
