Synopsis

James Maley, George Watters, Donald Renton and Archibald Williams were members of Machine Gun Company No. 2 of the XV International Brigade. This is the first book to focus on a small group of men from different starting-points, ended up in the same battleground at Jarama, and then in the same prisons after capture by Franco's forces.
Their remarkable story is told both in their own words and in the recollections of their sons and daughters, through a prison notebook, newspaper reports, stills cut from newsreels, interviews, anecdotes and memories, with a foreword by Daniel Gray.
Our Fathers Fought Franco is a collective biography that promises to add significantly to the understanding of the motives of those who 'went because their open eyes could see no other way'.

A triumphant story of achievement in a world made for men!' - Katriona O'Sullivan, author of PoorJackie McCarthy O'Brien has led a truly remarkable life, from being born in 1961 to an Irish mother and Jamaican father (whom she never met) in Birmingham to growing up in Limerick. She was put in an industrial school as a baby by a priest for being an "illegitimate" black child and not recovered by her mother until she was five. As a teen she excelled at sport and played for Ireland in soccer, but when she was sexually harassed by a coach she changed to Irish rugby team. She got married at 21 before accepting her sexual feelings for women, and leaving the marriage with her three young children. Father Charles Coughlin (October 25, 1891 - October 27, 1979), was a controversial Canadian-American Catholic priest based in Michigan. Calling for monetary reforms, the nationalization of major industries and railroads, and protection of the rights of labor, Coughlin used weekly radio broadcasts to reach a mass audience of up to thirty million listeners during the 1930s. An early supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal, Coughlin later became a harsh critic. Coughlin’s commentary also became more anti-semitic, and he supported some of the fascist policies of Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito. As a result, many American Catholic leaders, as well as the Vatican, wanted Coughlin silenced. After the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Roosevelt administration finally forced the cancellation of his radio program and forbade the dissemination of his newspaper, Social Justice. In this recording, Coughlin discusses the concept of "unjust aggressors" both within the United States and abroad.

When Lucy Walsh was seventeen, she was given sixty-three of the love letters her Grandfather Dale wrote her Grandmother Wanda while he was overseas in World War II. A dozen years later, life changing events compelled Lucy to fly from Los Angeles to tiny Newman, Illinois, to spend three days talking with Wanda for what would be their final conversations. What began for Lucy as asking about the letters, became an unexpected master class in truly living.
This is the story, much of it conveyed in Wanda's inimitable voice, of Wanda's ninety-seven-year-long life, encompassing everything from her English ancestors to the residents in her nursing home. Through Lucy's candid questions and Wanda's soulful stories, we are swept up into one family's legacy that transports readers right into their own experiences and memories of family.
When Lucy isn't talking with Wanda, she visits other relatives and her own memories: the many trips over the years to Illinois and her mother's family; growing up in Los Angeles with two fathers, one a rock star; becoming a performer herself. Inevitably, in her effort to understand where and who she comes from, it becomes the story of Lucy's life as well, to which all readers can relate to in their own search for Self.
We fall in love with the unforgettable Grandma Wanda Mae, as she shares insights and confessions with plenty of comedic relief amongst the pain; making us laugh so hard we cry, and cry so hard we come back around to laughter. This book is a treasure trove of all Wanda has to teach us about what it truly means to be deeply, imperfectly, gloriously human, at every age.

The American colonies in the mid-18th century were a thriving part of the British Empire, but tensions had been brewing for decades. What began as minor grievances over trade and governance escalated into a full-scale rebellion. British policies, aimed at tightening control over the colonies, ignited widespread dissatisfaction, planting the seeds of revolution.
One of the earliest sources of discontent was the British system of taxation. The Sugar Act of 1764 and the Stamp Act of 1765 imposed direct levies on the colonies, enraging merchants, publishers, and legal professionals. The colonists, who had no direct representation in the British Parliament, saw these taxes as a blatant overreach. Their rallying cry—“No taxation without representation”—became a defining slogan of the growing resistance. The Stamp Act’s repeal in 1766 provided temporary relief, but the British government soon followed with new policies, including the Townshend Acts, which further strained relations.
The presence of British troops in colonial cities only exacerbated tensions. Stationed to enforce British laws and maintain order, soldiers were often viewed as an occupying force. Clashes between civilians and the military became frequent, culminating in the infamous Boston Massacre of 1770, where British troops fired into a crowd of unarmed colonists, killing five. This event, heavily publicized by Patriot leaders, fueled anti-British sentiment and strengthened calls for defiance.
