Beschreibung

William Wynn Westcott's 'On Suicide' is a profound and thought-provoking exploration of the theme of suicide through a historical and philosophical lens. Written in a concise and academic style, the book delves into the cultural, ethical, and psychological factors surrounding suicide, offering a comprehensive analysis of this sensitive and complex topic. Drawing on various literary and philosophical works, Westcott provides a nuanced perspective on the causes and consequences of suicide, challenging readers to reconsider their beliefs and attitudes towards mental health and existential crisis. As a respected scholar and co-founder of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, William Wynn Westcott brings a unique perspective to 'On Suicide' that reflects his deep knowledge of esoteric traditions and secret societies. His background in occultism and mysticism enriches the book with a spiritual dimension that adds depth and complexity to the discourse on suicide, making it a compelling and enlightening read for those interested in the intersection of philosophy, psychology, and spirituality. I highly recommend 'On Suicide' to readers seeking a scholarly and thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of suicide. Westcott's insightful analysis and engaging writing style make this book a valuable addition to the literature on mental health, ethics, and philosophy, shedding light on a topic that continues to challenge and provoke societal attitudes and moral debates.

This is volume 3 of Major John Richardson, 1832 novel Wacousta. It is set at Fort Detroit and the surrounding country during Pontiac's rebellion of 1763. The mysterious warrior Wacousta has aligned himself with the First Nations forces who are besieging Detroit and Fort Michilimackinac on the extreme western edge of the British North American frontier. Pontiac is determined to stop expansion into the region, by any means. Wacousta, is a great friend of Pontiac but has his own agenda. - revenge against the British Commander at Detroit, Colonel De Haldimar. The story begins with Wacousta stealing in to the secure fort and whispering something in to De Haldimar's ear. Only later to we discover the nature of his message. Meanwhile, Pontiac designs a clever scheme to break the siege at the well defended fort - a scheme so cunningly designed as to have every chance of success. Volume 3 is the conclusion of this engaging work. This book was written in 1832 and incorporates all the attitudes and perspectives of class, race and culture prevalent at the time. Some of the terminology is now considered offensive but was common in the nineteenth century. It is a powerful and engaging story, although the style of writing is extremely convoluted and complex, and can be difficult to read. I hope hearing it helps you enjoy it.

While historically a topic of great interest, controversies and general public discourse surrounding addiction have been growing rapidly, particularly in light of the rising death toll resulting from the opioid epidemic. In light of the common misconception that addictive behaviors are entirely volitional, misinformation and stigma have had a deleterious impact on the public's understanding concerning the nature, causes, and treatments of substance use disorders. Despite decades of research and tens of thousands of published and peer-reviewed investigations, critics continue to ask whether addiction is a genuine medical condition or a choice.

In Addiction, leading expert in the science and treatment of addiction Suzette Glasner aims to clear the air of some of the most polarizing and misleading information that dominates public thinking about addiction. Providing straight talk and sound guidelines for the general public as well as health professionals and policymakers, Glasner raises important questions related to addiction and answers them in an accessible yet empirically informed manner throughout the book. Offering an insightful overview of addiction from its origins, to forms of treatment and complications, this book will be the go-to resource for authoritative, up-to-date, accurate, and compelling information about this topic.

A fascinating history of the profitable paradox of the American outdoor experience: visiting nature first requires shopping

No escape to nature is complete without a trip to an outdoor recreational store or a browse through online offerings. This is the irony of the American outdoor experience: visiting wild spaces supposedly untouched by capitalism first requires shopping. With consumers spending billions of dollars on clothing and equipment each year as they seek out nature, the American outdoor sector grew over the past 150 years from a small collection of outfitters to an industry contributing more than 2 percent of the nation's economic output.

Rachel S. Gross argues that this success was predicated not just on creating functional equipment but also on selling an authentic, anticommercial outdoor identity. In other words, shopping for the woods was also about being—or becoming—the right kind of person. Demonstrating that outdoor culture is commercial culture, Gross examines Americans' journey toward outdoor expertise by tracing the development of the nascent outdoor goods industry, the influence of World War II on its growth, and the boom years of outdoor businesses.
