Synopsis

Advanced Course in Yogi Philosophy and Oriental Occultism (Unabridged) invites readers into a profound exploration of Eastern metaphysical traditions through a curated collection that delves into the depths of yogic and occult wisdom. Bridging pragmatic philosophical insights with esoteric teachings, this anthology provides an intimate glimpse into the transformative power of spiritual practice. Each work within the anthology stands as a testament to the enduring vitality of yogi philosophy and its relevance to modern seekers, offering narratives that range from foundational yogic practices to the subtleties of meditation and advanced alchemical doctrines. The contributing authors, William Walker Atkinson and Yogi Ramacharaka, collectively bring to the anthology their extensive experience within the New Thought Movement, which sought to harmonize Eastern and Western spiritual traditions in the early 20th century. Atkinson, writing under the pseudonym Yogi Ramacharaka, draws from the rich tapestry of Eastern philosophical schools and adds a unique Western interpretive flair. Their works collectively capture the zeitgeist of a historical moment that marries transcendentalism with Eastern thought, facilitating a dialogue that expands the reader's comprehension of spiritual wholeness and metaphysical inquiry. This anthology is a compelling journey for those who seek to understand the confluence of mysticism and philosophy. It stands as a valuable resource, offering a panoramic view of Eastern cosmology combined with the nuanced interpretations of Western enlightenment seekers. Readers are encouraged to delve into these pages to cultivate a deeper understanding of spiritual disciplines, appreciate the synthesis of diverse philosophical perspectives, and engage with the continuing dialogue between cultures and eras that this volume faithfully communicates.

In the process of becoming one of the most famous Americans of her era, Susan B. Anthony’s legacy has overshadowed many of her contemporaries who were also active in the fight for civil rights. Among them, few led as interesting or progressive a life as Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, who grew up in a family that encouraged every kind of pursuit for girls and provided an educational foundation that would propel Walker in many fields. In addition to becoming a surgeon, Walker and her family eschewed conventional dress styles in favor of being comfortable, doing so in an era that ensured she would be ridiculed for it. Undeterred, Walker’s work took her across enemy lines during the Civil War, leading to her arrest in the South and to her recognition as one of only eight civilians in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor for rendering "valuable service to the Government, and her efforts have been earnest and untiring in a variety of ways."
Although her legacy has not endured quite as much as some of the other activists who fought for civil rights in the late 19th century, she has been remembered and celebrated in the past few decades, including the unveiling of a giant statue of her in her hometown of Oswego, New York. She has also been commemorated with a stamp, and in the near future, a U.S. Army fort may be named after her in recognition of her service during the Civil War.

'The poem I had planned to write on the banks of the Ganga was never written. But it materialized in my life.'Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), Nobel laureate and polymath, is one of the most eminent Indian writers of world literature. This volume presents new English translations of twenty of his short stories. Taking in a wide variety of registers (comedies, tragedies, the mundane and the fantastical), the selection showcases Tagore as one of the earliest practitioners of the short story genre in the Bengali language, influenced by both Indian and Western traditions. In particular, Tagore added a unique style of his own to Western conventions of the short story form, allowing him to present the everyday in literary vignettes, seamlessly weaving in the rhythms of daily life, rural landscapes. The stories also offer social critiques—of colonialism, dowry, and immolation of widows. A highly sensitive and thoughtful observer of life, Tagore's vision transcends regional boundaries, embracing a universal humanity that resonates across cultures, while never denouncing a deep indigeneity. These authoritative translations by a team of expert scholars are accompanied by Sumit Chakrabarti's introduction, reflecting on the literary and historical implications of Tagore's stories.

In the late 1960s, Patsy Channing, a stunningly beautiful young woman, was suspended from the venerable Mississippi State College for Women for breach of conduct. The resulting scandal reached all the way to the Columbus courthouse, and the press ate it up.

But Patsy's story starts long before that, living with a preoccupied and troubled mother in Memphis, Tennessee. Music becomes her ticket out and a vehicle for the one thing she covets most—a chance to be crowned Miss America.

In Confessions of a Southern Beauty Queen, Julie Hines Mabus provides a peek into that world—a world struggling through the civil rights movement, reeling from the death of JFK, and cutting loose with the musical innovations from Memphis and Detroit. Patsy develops a close friendship with a guitarist at Stax Recording Studio, giving her firsthand exposure to the early Memphis Soul Sound.

Confessions of a Southern Beauty Queen opens and closes with the end of Patsy's time at Mississippi State College for Women on that fateful spring morning in 1968 when she entered the Columbus courthouse. Patsy's story, marked with tragedy and triumph, mirrors that of a growing and evolving South, where change never comes easy.
