My aim with this book is to help bring some clarity and a sense of direction to adults and younger people alike.
As an adult, if you find yourself kind of stuck, say you’ve had a fair amount of experiences up to this point, you are financially independent and overall pretty content but feel you kind of lost contact with some of your dreams and aspirations from around…10 years ago…keep on reading.
Or, if you’re a student who feels overwhelmed in today’s world where we’re all constantly flooded by the online medium which fights for each second of our attention and distorts reality by feeding us fake reference points…keep on reading.
It’s completely understandable how someone can feel lost and not know what to do with one’s life.
While I do not claim to hold an absolute truth, I firmly believe that this book can and will be seen as a clear and solid starting point in helping you find at least some answers to questions you have or may have, whether you’re an adult looking to improve your life, or a student feeling your life is just starting out.
In short, my idea was to take Abraham Maslow’s Expanded Hierarchy of Needs and pump it full of steroids.
I wanted to take this pyramid and turn it into a tesseract.
Ok…so maybe that fifth cup of coffee at 3 a.m. wasn’t such a good idea after all.

WINNER OF THE 2025 CANADIAN JEWISH LITERARY AWARD FOR MEMOIR
NOMINEE FOR THE HERITAGE TORONTO 2025 BOOK AWARDA stolen sign, ‘No Jews Live Here,’ kept John Lorinc’s Hungarian Jewish family alive during the Holocaust. From pre-war Budapest to post-war Toronto, journalist John Lorinc unspools four generations of his Hungarian Jewish family's journey through the Holocaust, the 1956 Revolution, and finally exodus from a country that can't rid itself of its antisemitic demons. This braided saga centres on the writer's eccentric and defiant grandmother, a consummate survivor with a love of flashy jewellery and a vicious tongue. Lorinc also traces the stories of both his grandfathers and his father, all of whom fell victim, in different ways, to the Nazis’ genocidal campaign to rid Europe of Jews.
This is a deeply reported but profoundly human telling of a vile part of history, told through Lorinc’s distinctively astute and compassionate consideration of how cities and cultures work. Set against the complicated and poorly understood background of Hungary's Jewish community, No Jews Live Here is about family stories, and how the narratives of our lives are shaped by our times and historical forces over which we have no control.
"John Lorinc weaves Hungarian history with the equally fascinating history of his own family to tell a deeply researched story with universal resonance: how events, enormous and seemingly tiny (a genocidal war, foggy skies), conspire to create outcomes with life-and-death implications through generations." – Marsha Lederman, author of Kiss the Red Stairs: The Holocaust, Once Removed

Ten essays on how reading and meaningfully engaging with literature can help us live better, more purposeful lives.
    How do we live fully?
    How do we live successfully?
Adrift in an anchorless world, we often worry about where we are heading. What meaning can we hope to find our modern, secular life? The answer, Ben Hutchinson explains, can be found by looking to writers and thinkers to help us live more purposefully, more mindfully – more fully.
Interweaving his own (mis-)adventures with those of authors such as T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust and Joan Didion, On Purpose proposes ten ways in which reading and writing encourage us to ask difficult questions, project our minds into the past and future, and see ourselves and others differently.
Engaging, uplifting and aphoristic, this book is for anyone who has lost their sense of direction or wishes to radically transform the way they live.
Ben Hutchinson's On Purpose is a non-fiction collection of essays that combines philosophy, ethics, and literary criticism to explore the concept of happiness. This top-rated book is a testament to the power of literature in personal growth and self-help.
For fans of Mary Beard (Confronting the Classics), Gary Gutting (Talking God), Terry Eagleton (Ideology), Nedra Glover Tawwab (Set Boundaries, Find Peace), and Catherine Belsey (A Future for Criticism).

From one of Mexico's most exciting young writers, a cosmopolitan and candid essay collection exploring life in cities across the world and reflecting on the transformative importance of literature in understanding ourselves

In ten intimate essays, Daniel Saldaña París explores the cities he has lived in, each one home to a new iteration of himself. In Mexico City he's a young poet eager to prove himself. In Montreal—an opioid addict desperate for relief. In Madrid—a lonely student seeking pleasure in grotesque extremes. These now diverging, now coalescing selves raise questions: Where can we find authenticity? How do we construct the stories that define us? What if our formative memories are closer to fiction than truth?

Saldaña París turns to literature and film, poetry and philosophy for answers. The result is a hybrid of memoir and criticism, "a sensory work, full of soundscapes, filth, planes, closed spaces, open vastness" (El País).
