Margaret Gabrielle Vere Campbell was born on the 1st November 1885 on Hayling Island in Hampshire.
Her childhood was fraught with problems, her alcoholic father left early in her life and was later found dead on a London Street. Life thereafter was poverty with an uncaring mother.
However, her talents took her to the Slade School of Fine Art and later to study in Paris.
Her first fiction, written at a mere 16, was a violent medieval historical novel, ‘The Viper of Milan’. Initially rejected by several publishers it went on to become a best-seller
After this her prolific writings were the main financial support for the family. Her literary output numbered over 150 volumes, mainly under the pseudonym of Marjorie Bowen but she also used the names Joseph Shearing, George R Preedy, John Winch, Robert Paye and Margaret Campbell. Within this output she assigned the pseudonyms to the various genres she worked across, from Historical fiction to supernatural short stories.
Perhaps her best known work is the 1909 book ‘Black Magic’, a Gothic horror novel about a medieval witch.
Several of her works were also adapted into films.
She was married twice. The first to Zefferino Emilio Constanza (they had two children), who died of tuberculosis, and then to Arthur L Long (and another two children).
Marjorie Bowen died on the 23rd December 1952 at St Charles Hospital in North Kensington, London after suffering a serious concussion from a fall in her bedroom. She was 67.

“I am all here—head, hands, legs, and all the rest of it, but it happens I’m invisible.”
When a mysterious stranger arrives at the Coach and Horses inn during a biting snowstorm, he is wrapped head-to-foot in bandages, his eyes hidden behind enormous blue goggles. The villagers of Iping are initially curious, then suspicious, and finally terrified as they realize that the linen wrappings conceal not a scarred man, but an impossible vacancy. Griffin, a brilliant but unhinged scientist, has discovered the secret of invisibility, but in doing so, he has severed his connection to humanity. As his power grows, so does his megalomania, leading to a reign of terror, burglary, and a desperate flight across the English countryside.
Why you will love this: The Invisible Man: A Grotesque Romance is a foundational pillar of Science Fiction and Psychological Horror. This production captures the claustrophobic tension of a small town meeting a modern god, exploring the Hard Science Fiction concepts of light refraction alongside the literary themes of moral decay and social isolation. Narrated by Michael Craig, the story breathes with cinematic atmosphere and Victorian dread.
Herbert George Wells, often called the 'Father of Science Fiction,' published this masterpiece in 1897. His ability to blend grounded, scientific speculation with profound social commentary remains unparalleled in the history of English literature.

When her former governess finds happiness as the bride of a local widower, the brilliant and beautiful Emma Woodhouse — one of Jane Austen’s immortal creations — flatters herself that she alone has secured the marriage and that she possesses a special talent for bringing lovers together. The young heiress next busies herself with finding a suitable husband for her friend and protégé, Harriet Smith, setting off an entertaining sequence of comic mishaps and misunderstanding in this sparkling comedy of English-village romance. Beneath its considerable wit, the novel is also the story of a young woman’s progress toward self-understanding.

Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers is a lively, humorous chronicle of the adventures and misadventures of Samuel Pickwick and his fellow club members. Originally published in serial form, it captures the everyday quirks and follies of early 19th-century English society with a warmth and satire that became Dickens' trademark. From comic duels and courtroom scenes to absurd journeys through the countryside, each episode paints a vivid picture of the joys and eccentricities of life. What makes the novel enduring is not only its humor but also its compassion. Behind the laughter lies a gentle critique of social injustices, the follies of pride, and the resilience of friendship. It is Dickens at his most playful, yet even here he reveals the depth of observation that would define his later, more serious works.
