Beschreibung

Of Human Bondage is a novel by W. Somerset Maugham. It is generally agreed to be his masterpiece and to be strongly autobiographical in nature. The book begins with the death of Helen Carey, the mother of nine-year-old Philip Carey. Philip's father Henry had died a few months before, and the orphan Philip, born with a club foot, is sent to live with his Aunt Louisa and Uncle William Carey. Early chapters relate Philip's experience at the vicarage. Louisa tries to be a mother to Philip, but his uncle takes a cold disposition towards him. Philip's uncle has a vast collection of books, and Philip enjoys reading to find ways to escape his mundane existence. Less than a year later, Philip is sent to a boarding school. His uncle and aunt wish for him to eventually attend Oxford. Philip's disability makes it difficult for him to fit in. Philip is informed that he could have earned a scholarship for Oxford, which both his uncle and school headmaster see as a wise course, but Philip insists on going to Germany. In Germany, Philip lives at a boarding house with other foreigners. Philip enjoys his stay in Germany. Philip's guardians decide to take matters into their own hands and they convince him to move to take up an apprenticeship…

In 2014 Sonya Bilocerkowycz is a tourist at a deadly revolution. At first she is enamored with the Ukrainians' idealism, which reminds her of her own patriotic family. But when the romantic revolution melts into a war with Russia, she becomes disillusioned, prompting a return home to the US and the diaspora community that raised her. As the daughter of a man who studies Ukrainian dissidents for a living, the granddaughter of war refugees, and the great-granddaughter of a gulag victim, Bilocerkowycz has inherited a legacy of political oppression. But what does it mean when she discovers a missing page from her family's survival story—one that raises questions about her own guilt?

In these linked essays, Bilocerkowycz invites listeners to meet a swirling cast of post-Soviet characters, including a Russian intelligence officer who finds Osama bin Laden a few weeks after 9/11; a Ukrainian poet whose nose gets broken by Russian separatists; and a long-lost relative who drives a bus into the heart of Chernobyl. On Our Way Home from the Revolution muddles our easy distinctions between innocence and culpability, agency and fate.

“Chloé Caldwell’s 2014 novella Women, about a woman falling in love with another woman for the first time, became a queer cult classic. In Trying, the writer again uses the fragmentary form, candor, and wit to study ‘the brain of someone trying to get pregnant.’ … When another form of grief suddenly bursts into her life, it ultimately signals a rebirth.”—Jasmine Vojdani, Vulture

If you’re writing about your life in real time, are you inherently fucked?

Over the years that Chloé Caldwell had been married and hoping to conceive a child, she’d read everything she could find on infertility. But no memoir or message board reflected her experience; for one thing, most stories ended with in vitro fertilization, a baby, or both. She wanted to offer something different.

Caldwell began a book. She imagined a selective journal about her experience coping with stasis and uncertainty. Is it time to quit coffee, find a new acupuncturist, get another blood test? Her questions extended to her job at a clothing boutique and to her teaching and writing practice. Why do people love equating publishing books with giving birth? What is the right amount of money to spend on pants or fertility treatments? How much trying is enough? She ignored the sense that something else in her life was wrong that was not on the page … until she extracted a confession from her husband.

Broken by betrayal but freed from domesticity, Caldwell felt reawakened, to long-buried desires, to her queer identity, to pleasure and possibility. She kept writing, making sense of her new reality as it took shape. With the candor, irreverence, and heart that have made Caldwell’s work beloved, Trying intimately captures a self in a continuous process of becoming—and the mysterious ways that writing informs that process.

This is small copy of the introduction of the book: Welcome to the remarkable journey through the life and times of Jan Hus, a name that resonates through the annals of history as a symbol of courage, conviction, and religious reform. In this captivating biography, we delve deep into the extraordinary life of Jan Hus, a Czech theologian, philosopher, and the first church reformer.
Our journey begins in the heart of Bohemia, in the small village of Husinec, where Jan Hus was born around the year 1369. Little did the world know that this unassuming child would grow up to challenge the mighty Catholic Church and ignite a movement that would forever alter the course of European history.
As we progress through these pages, we will unravel the story of Hus's early education and his academic pursuits at the University of Prague. Here, in the hallowed halls of learning, he laid the foundation for his future endeavors, setting the stage for his role as a master of arts in 1396. But it was his appointment as a university preacher in 1401 that truly marked the inception of his remarkable journey. The Bethlehem Chapel in Prague became the pulpit from which Hus would not only disseminate religious teachings but also nurture the seeds of reform.
