Synopsis

In "Where the Forest Murmurs," William Sharp weaves a rich tapestry of nature-infused prose, blending lyrical descriptions with profound philosophical insights. This work invites readers into a verdant landscape where the often-overlooked whispers of the forest come alive, reflecting the interplay between humanity and the natural world. Sharp's literary style is characterized by his use of vivid imagery and evocative language, which transports readers into a sensory exploration of the woods, revealing not only their beauty but also their intricate ecosystems. The book fits within the Romantic tradition, echoing themes from poets like Wordsworth and Keats, while presenting a unique perspective rooted in Sharp'Äôs 19th-century context, marked by a growing awareness of nature's fragility amid industrialization. William Sharp, a Scottish poet and writer, often explored themes of identity and nature in his works, drawing from his own experiences of the Scottish Highlands and his philosophical musings on existence. His deep connection to the environment and engagement with literary circles of the time influenced his portrayal of nature in this novel, making it a reflection of both his personal journey and the broader cultural climate regarding the appreciation of natural beauty. For readers seeking a profound engagement with the natural world through lyrical prose, "Where the Forest Murmurs" is a remarkable exploration of humanity's relationship with nature. Sharp'Äôs ability to evoke the senses and provoke thought makes this book a worthwhile read for both nature lovers and literary enthusiasts alike. It is not just a journey into a forest, but an invitation to reflect on one's place within it.

Performed and Recorded at The Gaiety Theatre in Ayr on the 15th of September 2023.Following warnings of an imminent catastrophic flood, everyone has been evacuated except for Elsie and Bert, who stubbornly decided to stay put. As the wind howls and the increasingly heavy rain batters the windows outside, they sit on their bed enjoying their “picnic at the end of the world”, made from the entire contents of their freezer. Reminiscing about happier times in their candlelit sanctuary, they’re oblivious to the rapidly rising water levels downstairs. The next morning, woken by the sun shining through a gap in the curtains, Bert goes to the window to survey the damage. He throws open the curtains, then stands in stunned silence, naked and swaying, as he tries to comprehend the view that greets him.

Inspired by The Wiz, this debut, full-length poetry collection celebrates South Side Chicago and a Black woman's quest for self-discovery—one that pulls her away from the safety of home and into her power

I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times takes its inspiration and concept from the cult classic film The Wiz to explore a Black woman's journey out of the South Side of Chicago and into adulthood. The narrative arc of The Wiz—a tumultuous departure from home, trials designed to reveal new things about the self, and the eventual return home—serves as a loose trajectory for this collection, pulling listeners through an abandoned barn, a Wendy's drive-thru, a Beyoncé video, Grandma's house, Sunday service, and the corner store. At every stop, the speaker is made to confront her womanhood, her sexuality, the visibility of her body, alcoholism in her family, and various ways in which narratives are imposed on her.

Subverting monolithic ideas about the South Side of Chicago, and re-casting the city as a living, breathing entity, I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times spans sestinas, sonnets, free-verse, and erasures, all to reimagine the concept of home. Chicago isn't just a city, but a teacher, a lingering shadow, a way of seeing the world.
