  Poetry. A form of words that seems so elegantly simple in one verse and so cleverly complex in another.  Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us. 
   
  Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy. 
   
  In the volumes of this series we take a look through the prism of individual regions of the United States through the centuries and decades. 
   
  The United States may be many things: the world’s policeman, a bully, a shameless purveyor of mass market culture but it also, in its better moments, a standard bearer for truth, transparency, equality and the more positive qualities of democracy. 
   
  Little wonder that’s its poets are rightly acknowledged as wonders of their art.  Leading lights in the fight against slavery and for equality, even if the rest of the Nation is finding it problematic to catch up.   
   
  In this volume we have collected verse from poets born in one of the most famous cities in the World: New York. Within its five boroughs are a small universe of wonder and magic, a kaleidoscope of almost everything the planet has to offer.  In past times New York was a gateway to a new land and a new future whatever the misery and tragedy of your former life.  Of course, this golden vision was not attained by everyone.  But our local poets, including such luminaries as Emma Lazarus, Herman Melville, Edith Wharton, Alice Duer Miller, and Alan Seeger bring vision and truth to this unrivalled city and its hallowed status in the world of verse.

  A Requiem For What Could Have Been

  I wrote these poems incrementally, but collated, edited, and recorded them collectively. A process that was at first therapeutic and then brutally revealing. A lot of the pieces touch upon regret, lost possibilities, and missed opportunities born of trauma, neglect, mental illness, and fear, as well as the desperation that comes when you find yourself searching for hope inside of darkness.What could’ve been and what is, are not the same thing. A lot of my pain comes from an inability to reconcile those two disparate facets of my existence. I know I can’t have everything I want, no one can. But when you are broken, it can be hard to know what you want, let alone have any idea of how to attain it.Thus, I write. I write to heal, to express the darkness within, to get it onto the page, and into the light.   Alan and Katie, a young couple married for not quite a year, have both been consumed with work and wrapped up in starting their lives ever seen their marriage. But now, they've been given the chance to escape their busy lives for the first time since their honeymoon. Katie's father, a big-time real estate broker, has offered them the keys to a beach house for a weekend, and the two jump at the opportunity. Katie's younger brother comes in to watch the house and family dog, and she and Alan strike directly for the beach, eager for a weekend of fun and sun. 
  Unfortunately, Mother Nature has other plans, and strong thunderstorms follow the unlucky couple all the way to their destination and stick around. Unable to fully enjoy all the ocean has to offer, the two are stuck inside for the weekend. Now, the young couple has to find ways to enjoy themselves indoors, all plans for swimming and bikinis washed away under the torrential rainfall. 
  Will Alan and Katie make it work? Or will the weekend be a bust and will they return to their busy lives at the end of the weekend as desperate for love as they were at the beginning?
