Beschreibung

A senior diplomat traumatised by the violent death of his wife moves back to UK with his now fifteen-year-old, greatly distressed daughter to become Professor of International Relations at a new university. A high school teacher in a neighbouring town befriends the girl and remonstrates with her father at his overly protective care of her. A loving relationship develops as the teacher and the girl form a mutually strong bond of love. The book interweaves council debates full of frustration and conflict about renewal of the historic but declining small town of the action. The imminent closure of the local newspaper provides opportunity for caustic comment.

The First Jungle Book (1894) is a collection of stories by the English author Rudyard Kipling. Most of the characters are animals such as Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, though a principal character is the boy or "man-cub" Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by wolves. The stories are set in a forest in India; one place mentioned repeatedly is "Seonee" (Seoni), in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.
A major theme in the book is abandonment followed by fostering, as in the life of Mowgli, echoing Kipling's own childhood. The theme is echoed in the triumph of protagonists including Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and The White Seal over their enemies, as well as Mowgli's. Another important theme is of law and freedom; the stories are not about animal behaviour, still less about the Darwinian struggle for survival, but about human archetypes in animal form. They teach respect for authority, obedience, and knowing one's place in society with "the law of the jungle", but the stories also illustrate the freedom to move between different worlds, such as when Mowgli moves between the jungle and the village. Critics have also noted the essential wildness and lawless energies in the stories, reflecting the irresponsible side of human nature.
The Jungle Book has remained popular, partly through its many adaptations for film and other media.

Philip Merriwether has never impressed anyone. He drifts through life unnoticed, forgetful, and harmless. Then something changes. Suddenly, every fact ever written seems to live inside his head, waiting to be spoken. Trivia becomes certainty. Questions become answers before they’re finished. What begins as a windfall on a television quiz show turns into something far more serious when his knowledge strays into territory no civilian should ever possess.
Governments do not tolerate loose secrets. When Philip repeats classified information on live television, the celebration ends overnight. Armed agents appear at his door. Military leaders demand explanations. The President himself wants to know how a forgotten clerk now holds the blueprints of national defense in his memory. Philip never meant to betray anyone. He simply answers questions. But when knowing everything includes weapons, troop locations, and covert plans, even innocence becomes a threat.
What makes this story unforgettable is the quiet transformation at its center. A man once pitied for his blank mind must now live with a mind too full to control. The very thing that once made him invisible becomes the reason he can never disappear again. His dilemma is immediate and human: when knowledge cannot be contained, what responsibility comes with it? And who gets to decide how it is used?
Randall Garrett built his reputation on wit, precision, and an ability to twist speculative ideas into sharp satire. His fiction appeared in Astounding Science Fiction, Analog, Galaxy, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. He collaborated frequently with Robert Silverberg and Harlan Ellison, and he is best remembered for the Lord Darcy stories, which blended alternate history with detective fiction. In this tale, Garrett uses humor to explore a far more unsettling possibility—what happens when information becomes a weapon simply because someone remembers it.

It's goodbye world when an ancient dragon awakes. It was the opportunity of a lifetime for this podcaster when I was invited to McMurdo Station, situated in Antarctica, to debunk all the conspiracy theories surrounding that barren wasteland of ice and snow. I'm not a fan of the cold—or the grim captain in charge of babysitting me—but I'm determined to give loyal supporters of my show what they want. The truth.

It turns out Antarctica does have a secret. A big one.I mean, massive, with a tail large enough to knock down mountains and teeth several times the size of me—all the better to satisfy its appetite for flesh. The dragon that has awoken isn't the cute and cuddly kind, but rather the nightmare version hellbent on destruction, and it's claimed me as its unwilling servant. Stranded in Antarctica, there is no escaping my dragon, even as my steely-eyed soldier tries his damnedest. Are we doomed to be amongst its first victims, or will the arrival of four hatchlings and their sire somehow prevent the coming massacre? Given their plan is to try and reason with their very ancient relative, I'd say grab what pleasure you can now because humanity is screwed.

    Contains mature themes.

CBC BOOKS CANADIAN POETRY COLLECTIONS TO WATCH FOR IN FALL 2023What can we remove from ourselves and still be ourselves?

Written after a brain tumour diagnosis, The King of Terrors is a treatise on living with illness and the way that language, relationships and our immersion in the natural world can free us from the spectre of impending collapse. Johnstone's poems oscillate between the personal and the public, the clinical and the spiritual, so we're never quite sure what we are seeing, no matter how familiar."There is a moving, fierce intensity to The King of Terrors. Jim Johnstone knowingly reminds us that betrayals of the body are also betrayals of language, ‘each bloody / mouthful a sentence fragment.’ These are lines of admission, ambition, and harrowing truth, and Johnstone – despite a future only as certain ‘as the body // it inhabits’ – offers a form of redemption, for the fortitude of the sick, for poetry itself." – Randall Mann, author of Deal: New and Selected Poems
"The King of Terrors is a luminous meditation on the otherworld of illness and treatment, contemplating the mysteries of death and the frontiers of mind and body with sharp clarity and radical vulnerability. These mesmerizing, urgent poems admit us not only to waiting rooms and brain scans, but also to the intimate fears that accompany the estranging experience of being unwell, or, as the poet says, living 'between / age and agency.' Haunting, stark, and lyrical, The King of Terrors is charged, as all the best poetry is, with the shock of the mortal." – Sarah Holland-Batt, author of The Jaguar
