Summary

In "George Cruikshank," William Makepeace Thackeray presents an incisive exploration of the life and artistic contributions of the renowned caricaturist and illustrator. Written in a witty and satirical style characteristic of Thackeray's oeuvre, the book situates Cruikshank within the broader context of 19th-century English society, examining how his work reflected and critiqued the social and political issues of the time. Thackeray deftly combines biographical narrative with social commentary, using a richly descriptive language that paints a vivid picture of Cruikshank's world, showcasing both the artist's talent and the turbulent environment in which he operated. Thackeray, a contemporary of Cruikshank, was deeply influenced by the social dynamics of his era, often drawing upon his own experiences as a keen observer of English society. His background in art and literature, along with his commitment to social reform, provided him with a unique lens through which to appreciate and critique Cruikshank's work. This insight allowed Thackeray to present a multi-faceted portrait of the artist, intertwining their lives through shared cultural and artistic pursuits. "George Cruikshank" is an essential read for scholars and enthusiasts of 19th-century literature and art alike. Thackeray's blend of biography and literary critique invites readers to engage with the transformative power of satire, making it an invaluable resource for understanding the interplay between art and society.

Gus Hempelstein had only wanted to change things a little bit. He was about to find out that when you were dealing with Vabeh Gregson Bennett, you had to go big or find another playground.
Morgan and Devon Gregson Bennett are an interracial creative power couple living happily enough in Brooklyn until a freak accident leaves a little girl orphaned in Los Angeles. Setting aside reservations about the price motherhood will exact on their marriage and careers, Morgan and Devon agree to adopt Vabeh, a bi-racial ethnic-hair-products heiress. Vabeh touches down in New York, wearing last season’s fur and on a mission to quickly distinguish herself from the other bold-faced names at her new school, the tony School for Spoiled Kids.
Vabeh’s meteoric ascension as a painter isn’t enough to quell her ambition, so she opens the Walk-In Art Gallery. Soon, she has collectors and classmates clamoring for her attention. All is proceeding according to plan, until her trusted gallerina, Gus Hempelstein, turns in his skinny jeans and defects to open a rival gallery, the Sit Down, backed by Devon’s ex-lover and powerful art world patron, Pim Logan.
Even with a publicist and therapist working overtime on Vabeh’s behalf to protect her art world darling status, Morgan and Devon’s parenting skills are put to the test as the press breathlessly covers their every move.
Will Vabeh crumple under the weight of Gus’s devastating betrayal, or will she dust it off, chalking it up to just another day on the playground?

"Art is not a handicraft, it is the transmission of feeling the artist has experienced."

This essay, first published in English in 1898, challenges the notion that art's value lies solely in beauty or technical skill. Tolstoy redefines art as a moral and emotional force, and argues that true art is the sincere communication of feeling from artist to audience, fostering positive emotions and societal unity, and rejecting the notion that art can be morally corrupting. He argues that the essence of art lies in its ability to convey emotional truth and urges his audience to re-evaluate how art is perceived and practised in society.
Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, and social reformer, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all time. He is best known for his epic novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, both celebrated for their intricate character development and profound exploration of moral dilemmas and human nature. In his later years, Tolstoy experienced a spiritual awakening which led him to reject materialism and embrace a life of simplicity, seeking to align his life with his beliefs about non-violence and compassion. Tolstoy's legacy endures not only through his literary masterpieces but also through his profound impact on literature and philosophy.

As Jews tried to escape Nazi Germany in the 1930s, they faced unthinkable roadblocks in obtaining exit visas. And while they were denied entry in one country after another, a bureaucratic oddity enabled some of them to flee to an unlikely destination: Shanghai, China.

In this LATW original commission, playwright Kate McAll used the survivors’ own words to create a narrative of people starting their lives over in a completely new land.
