Beschreibung

In "Essays on Russian Novelists," William Lyon Phelps offers a profound exploration of the works of Russia's literary giants, including Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Turgenev. Through a blend of critical analysis and personal reflection, Phelps dissects the intricate layers of these authors' narratives, elucidating themes of existentialism, morality, and the human condition. His prose is marked by clarity and eloquence, positioning the essays within the broader context of early 20th-century literary criticism, where the Russian novel was gaining renewed interest among Western readers. Phelps's insightful observations serve to bridge cultural divides, shedding light on how these novels resonate across different societal landscapes. William Lyon Phelps was a prominent American literary scholar and educator, renowned for his passion for literature and his belief in its transformative power. His extensive academic background, coupled with his travels and study in Europe, allowed him to intimately engage with the Russian literary tradition. This deep-rooted understanding, combined with his eloquent writing style, positioned him uniquely to convey the significance of these authors to an American audience during a time of cultural exploration. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the interplay between literature and philosophy. Phelps's essays not only illuminate the essence of Russian literature but also encourage readers to reflect on their human experience through the lens of these timeless narratives.

In 2007, after almost 40 years of operations, the SAS ceased operations in Northern Ireland and ended the longest operational commitment in the unit's history. It had been a brutal and ruthless conflict on both sides with the SAS famously describing its attitude to the use of lethal force as 'Big Boys' Rules'. Anyone suspect caught with a gun or bomb could expect to be shot without question.Starting in 1969, Mark Urban reveals the extraordinary history of the special forces' operations in Northern Ireland and the unenviable dilemmas faced by intelligence chiefs engaged in a daily struggle against one of the world's most sophisticated terrorist organisations.'This is a book that needed to be written and which fulfils the essentials of any Ulster story; it expands understanding beyond fragmented jingoism and newspaper headlines.' Systemic - How Racism Is Making...

    Layal Liverpool

Layal Liverpool spent years bouncing from doctor to doctor, each one failing to diagnose her dermatological complaint. Just when she'd grown used to the idea that she had an extremely rare and untreatable skin condition, one dermatologist, after a quick exam, told her that she had a classic (and common) case of eczema and explained that it often appears differently on darker skin. Her experience stuck with her, making her wonder whether other medical conditions might be going undiagnosed in darker-skinned people and whether racism could, in fact, make people sick.

The pandemic taught us that diseases like Covid disproportionately affect people of color. Here, Liverpool goes a step further to show that this disparity exists for all types of illness and that it is caused by racism. In Systemic, she shares her journey to show how racism, woven into our societies, as well as into the structures of medicine and science, is harmful to our health. Refuting the false belief that there are biological differences between races, she goes on to show that racism-related stress and trauma can however, lead to biological changes that make people of color more vulnerable to illness, debunking the myth of illness as the great equalizer. Liverpool reveals the fatal stereotypes that keep people of color undiagnosed, untreated, and unsafe, and tells us what we can do about it.
