Synopsis

In 'The House on the Borderland,' William Hope Hodgson crafts an eerie narrative that blends horror and fantasy with philosophical musings on existence and the cosmos. This 1908 novella intricately weaves a tale of an isolated man in a decaying mansion, who becomes entangled in a series of mad and terrifying events. Hodgson's vivid and atmospheric prose immerses readers in a dreamlike landscape riddled with existential dread, foreshadowing elements that would later influence the genre of weird fiction. The unsettling imagery, combined with the psychological depth of the protagonist's descent into madness, showcases Hodgson's unique voice within the literary context of early 20th-century supernatural fiction. William Hope Hodgson, an early exponent of horror, was deeply influenced by his maritime background and experiences of isolation, both of which permeate his works. His fascination with the unknown and the otherworldly is vividly encapsulated in 'The House on the Borderland,' a reflection of his views on humanity's place in an uncaring universe. The text'Äôs experimental structure and complex narrative style mirror Hodgson's own tumultuous life and his quest to explore the boundaries of human understanding. This seminal work is highly recommended for readers who appreciate the exploration of the surreal and the philosophical underpinnings of horror. Hodgson'Äôs ability to evoke terror and contemplation within the same narrative invites readers to reflect on the profound and often unsettling mysteries of existence. 'The House on the Borderland' is not just a tale of fear; it is a profound examination of the human psyche confronted with the vast unknown.

I used to not believe in witches.

Until I enrolled in Dr. Alondra Johansen's metaphysical history class. Bryce, Alondra's super cute teaching assistant, told me my element sign is Earth. I am, in fact, a pragmatic sort of girl. My name is Cadence Hawthorne, but you can call me Katie.

Darkness fell over me and my family during my sophomore year. I thought maybe Alondra could help me with my grief and visions of ghosts. But there was this guy working with her, with a goatee and sardonic smile, who looked more like the devil than a professor. He did terrible things to my best friend, threatening my growing love for Bryce.

Do you believe in ghosts? How 'bout witches? I do. See, it was at Hawthorne University that I learned all about them. Come take a look in my grimoire. I wrote it all down here in Broomstick.
Content warning: Broomstick is a new adult college paranormal romance containing profanity, sexual scenes, adult situations, and, of course, witchcraft.

I rarely eat the food at my upscale Italian restaurant. Vampires need blood, not pasta. I crave the hunt, but I'm not a killer. A lady-killer, yes. There's something about the vampire in me that lures women. The only woman immune to my allure is my dearest and oldest friend, Lily. She helped me survive my transition to vampirism, despite also becoming a monster of sorts. Kind and full of life, Lily is everything I'm not. My unbeating heart wants more than friendship with the fairy, but I'm afraid to ruin our friendship. Besides, what would she want with a broody vampire?

As a fairy, people rarely take me seriously. With my glow and wings, I understand why they look at me and think of Tinker Bell, not Aristotle, but the degree I'm working toward will prove them wrong. As if by some miracle, I think I may finally have a boyfriend, too. He's not the man I really want, but my vampire friend Lorenzo is off-limits. Besides, a human boyfriend may be a better choice since every woman in town isn't chasing him. If only my heart would accept that Lorenzo isn't the man for me . . .

The human race prides itself on being the most organised of animals. We manage the fate of all other species. All other animals bow to our control or suffer. In diminishing numbers we allow some to live in the wild but in increasing numbers we domesticate them and whether they become part of the family, a best friend or wonderfully decorative accessory we take their compliance for granted. Such a shame then when these creatures take umbrage and prepare their revenge on us they do so in ways designed to show that when the tables turn ‘mercy’ is just a word that we humans plead for, expect, but, of course, is always denied.

Louisa MacDonald was born in 1845, one of eleven children of part Scottish descent. Together with three of her sisters they were known as the ‘MacDonald sisters’ primarily because of their marriages to well-known men.

In 1866 she married the wealthy industrialist Alfred Baldwin in a double wedding with her sister Anne.

After giving birth to Stanley on the 3rd August 1867, who would go on to become Prime Minister, she drifted into an unhappy life in her then residence in Worcestershire. She had at least one miscarriage and days alone depressed and in darkness.

During the 1870’s the couple travelled to find a lasting cure and tried a variety of treatments which led to her recovery in 1883. She now became a leading figure in her local village of Wilden, near Stourbridge.

Her writing career of novels, short stories and poetry is often overlooked, as was the case with so many women, yet her works reveal many talents and a gift for melding odd and weird circumstances into seemingly everyday life.

    Louisa Baldwin died in 1925.
