Synopsis

Abraham Lincoln – The True Story of a Great Life is a biography of an American lawyer and statesman who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War, and succeeded in preserving the Union, abolishing slavery, bolstering the federal government, and modernizing the U.S. economy. The author of the work, Jesse W. Weik, combined his research material with primary research material compiled by Lincoln's former law partner William Herndon, as well as several hundred pages of letters and essays written by Herndon himself setting out his own personal reminiscences of Lincoln, and forged the material into the first authoritative biography of Lincoln.

A sweeping view of Asia and the Pacific through a series of literary essays written by Australian Russell Darnley, who earned an OAM for services he provided after the Bali Bombings.Malaria, cockfights and magic are confronting realities in the Asia-Pacific region, yet beyond these more remains unseen and misunderstood. These cultures also exert an unacknowledged influence far beyond their borders.Inspired by one family's experience over three generations these tales are cradled in real events. Frailty of memory, the natural passing of people and the need to protect others, has rendered some into fiction. Central to this work is the idea that interactions with people from outside our culture challenge our expectations. Meanings and understandings must often be negotiated in intangible, non-rational and unseen ways. Foucault's notion of the third space has influenced this work, as has the Balinese belief that reality is an interaction of Sekala (the Seen) and Niskala (the Unseen). The unseen also has a political dimension here: "the elephant in the room". Choosing not to see, comforted by one's own culture alone, is to ignore that regional and global events are unfettered by such introspection.

In actuality, she was slumped on the floor sobbing about everything from the meaning of life to the pile of dirty laundry on the floor.Life without God was crashing in on her. And she was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. She uttered a desperate prayer, and then the idea came to her—thirty by thirty. And thus she embarked on a year-long quest to experience thirty religions by her thirtieth birthday. During her spiritual sojourn, Riley:-Was interrogated about her sex life by Amish grandmothers-Disco danced in a Buddhist temple-Fasted for thirty days without food—or wine-Washed her lady parts in a mosque bathroom-Was audited by Scientologists-Learned to meditate with an urban monk-Snuck into a Yom Kippur service with a fake grandpa in tow-And finally discovered she didn’t have to choose a religion to choose GodIn a debut memoir that is funny and earnest, Riley invites questioners, doubters, misfits, and curious believers to participate in the universal search to heal what life has broken. Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome takes you by the hand and reminds you that sometimes you first have to be lost in order to be found.

    Was he his brother's keeper?
Robert and Doris Angleton seemed to have the perfect life. Until she was coldly murdered in her own home, shot thirteen times in the head, chest, and abdomen . . .
Suddenly the ideal husband seemed anything but perfect: he was jailed, accused of hiring his older brother, Roger, to kill his wife for money—possibly as much as $2 million. However, without the crucial eyewitness testimony of Roger—who soon committed suicide in a Houston jail cell—the case against Robert rested entirely on circumstantial evidence. But the facts raise more questions than answers . . .
Doris Angleton—deeply involved in a secret love affair—had asked her husband for a divorce, which might have exposed him as a tax-skipping millionaire bookie and favored police informant . . .
Extensive handwritten and typewritten notes, coupled with a secretly taped conversation between Roger and another man outlining the murder, were found in a briefcase Roger Angleton was carrying when he was arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, it was later concluded that the second voice on the tape was not Robert's . . .
Also in Roger's briefcase: $64,000 in cash, along with a money wrapper with Robert's fingerprint on it . . .
Ultimately Roger confessed to the murder in his suicide note, exonerating his brother of any guilt . . .
A Texas jury came to one conclusion.
Listen to this fascinating true-crime account of greed, deception, and cold-blooded murder—and decide for yourself.
