Beschreibung

Astrological Time explores how ancient civilizations integrated astrology into their calendars, influencing predictions, rituals, and societal events. It reveals the intersection of history and science, demonstrating how cultures globally used astrological observations to understand time and destiny. Intriguingly, calendars served as tools for synchronization and prediction, vital for agriculture, religious ceremonies, and political strategies. The book argues that astrology was not mere superstition but a sophisticated system for understanding temporal cycles.

The book begins by introducing ancient astronomy and astrology, then examines specific examples of astrological calendars from various cultures, analyzing their structure, symbolism, and use. A section is dedicated to astrology's influence on religious and social practices.

Through archaeological findings, ancient texts, and comparative analyses, Astrological Time highlights common themes and unique adaptations in the use of astrology across cultures, providing a balanced perspective on its historical significance and enduring legacy.

The Unification of Germany had a significant impact on the whole country, the empire, and the decades after that. It was the inauguration for Germany into the 20th century, and the dreaded World War I and World War II that were partially consequences of that unification.
On January 18th, 1871, in the Palace of Versailles in France, Germany was lawfully merged into the German Empire, a Prussia-dominated country state with federal components. Throughout the Franco-Prussian War, princes of German countries assembled there to declare King Wilhelm I of Prussia Emperor of the German Empire.
The Treaty of Verdun in 843 developed a confederated kingdom of German princedoms that had existed for over 1,000 years. Even so, till 1800, there was no development of a German country identity, owing to the independent nature of baronial states; most occupants of the Holy Roman Empire, beyond those straight governed by the emperor, determined themselves mainly with their prince, instead of with the Empire as a whole. Kleinstaaterei, or "small-statery," happened called a result of this practice. Improvements in transport and interactions brought these areas closer together by the nineteenth century.
Today, you can learn more about what made this unification so special, and how it led to other events in history.

The Antebellum South, the period in American history before the Civil War, was a time of immense social, economic, and political turbulence. In this era, women of the South played crucial roles, yet their lives were shaped by complex systems of power, race, and class that significantly influenced their identities and experiences. The women of the Antebellum South, particularly those in the planter class, were often seen through the lens of their domestic roles—wives, mothers, and caretakers—but their contributions went far beyond these confines.
For white Southern women, the plantation system defined much of their existence. These women were raised to be the wives of wealthy landowners, and their lives were deeply connected to the economic and social systems that kept the plantation economy thriving. They managed large households, oversaw domestic servants (often enslaved people), and ensured that the daily needs of the family were met. While their lives were marked by relative comfort and privilege compared to many of their Northern counterparts, this privilege came at a cost—mainly the complicity in and active support of slavery. Their social status and wealth were intertwined with the exploitation of enslaved Africans, and the power dynamics within the household mirrored the racial and gender hierarchies of the time.

"Sometimes it is easier to see the trauma in others than it is in our own lives. It is in reading that we find validation. And in I Know Why She Stayed I had that experience, over and over. I did not know the term "economic abuse" but I have suffered from it. It is that shared experience that gives us words and power, for if we can name it, we can mourn what we lost, allow ourselves to feel rage, and finally release our pain and say, 'never again.'" - Lara Lillibridge, author of The Truth About Unringing Phones: Essays on Yearning and Girlish: Growing Up in a Lesbian Home
From Itch Perfect to the bonds of friendship, two gameshow participants' lives intertwine when they discover a shared trauma that restricted and shaped their futures. One trapped in a financially abusive marriage, the other forced into debt as a child, they begin to unravel the disturbing events of a shared truth: I Know Why She Stayed.

In "Whatever It Is, I'm Against It," president emeritus of Macalester College Brian Rosenberg draws on decades of higher education experience to expose the entrenched structures, practices, and cultures that inhibit meaningful postsecondary reform, even as institutions face serious challenges to their financial and educational models. The book pinpoints factors that hinder the ability of United States colleges and universities to be creative and entrepreneurial amid calls to improve affordability, access, and equity for students.

Rosenberg illustrates internal and external dynamics that impede institutional evolution. Pressures such as declining enrollment, escalating costs, and an oversupply of PhDs in academia have long signaled a grave need for reform within a profession that lacks organizational flexibility, depends greatly on reputation and ranking, and retains traditions, from the academic calendar to grading systems, that have remained essentially the same for decades.

Rosenberg looks outside the United States system to find possible antidotes in innovative higher education models such as student-centered and experiential learning approaches. This thought-provoking work offers ample evidence for presidents, chancellors, deans, provosts, and faculty to consider as they plan to achieve institutional transformation.
