Synopsis

In "The Rise and Influence of the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe," William Edward Hartpole Lecky embarks on an intricate exploration of the evolution of rational thought across Europe from the Renaissance to the 19th century. Lecky employs a compelling narrative style, deftly combining historical analysis with philosophical discourse, to illuminate how rationalism emerged as a transformative force against the backdrop of superstition and dogma. Through meticulous research, he articulates the complex interplay between various intellectual movements, religions, and scientific advancements, revealing how rationalism reshaped societal norms, ethics, and political thinking in profound ways. Lecky, an influential Irish historian and philosopher, was deeply entrenched in the intellectual currents of his time, which informed his exploration of rationalism. His interest in the interplay of history, ethics, and societal development is evident in his broader work, which often emphasizes the importance of reason and skepticism. Growing up in a time marked by scientific discovery and ideological upheaval likely fueled his quest to articulate the significant impact of rational thought on European civilization. This book is essential for readers interested in the foundations of modern thought and the historical evolution of rationalism. Lecky's nuanced understanding offers an enlightening perspective that resonates with contemporary debates about the role of reason in public discourse. Whether a scholar of philosophy or a curious reader, this work will enrich your understanding of the intellectual heritage of Europe.

The vault lies deep beneath the palace.
Alric, the Elran dancer, opens the immense stone door, guiding Heath and Caio into the vast chamber.
“The ancient inhabitants of this desert imbued items with a great number of dark powers. Some of these enchantments were distinctly...sexual.”
Caio’s pale cheeks flush deep pink as he realizes what kind of objects are locked away here.
The young dancer runs his fingertips over an ominous, silver-trimmed black box, its obsidian surface glittering temptingly in the torchlight.
“They say it houses a spirit. A creature that can provide endless pleasure.” Alric lowers his voice. “But only a powerful mage can open it...someone like you.”

The Seminole tribe is one of the best known Native American tribes, and one of the most feared among 19th century Americans and Spaniards. In fact, the origin of the term Seminole comes from a Spanish description of them as “wild”, which belies the fact that the Seminole had friendly relations with the British and Spanish during the colonial era.
To appreciate Seminole Native American mythology, their history and origins must be understood. Their forebears, the Muscogee, first migrated into what is now the Southeastern United States from various points in the north and west, which they accomplished by overpowering the indigenous inhabitants. The region was already occupied by several groups, including the Yuchi and Hitchiti, tribes that were likely descendants of the Moundbuilders. These tribes were subdued and then integrated into the Muscogee system. Thus, the traditions, beliefs, rituals, and mythologies of these various groups became the communal belief system of the Muscogee collective.
According to the Muscogee, humans emerged “somewhere in the west,” a location described as the “foundation of all things” or the “backbone” of the Earth. Most scholars associate this location with the Rocky Mountains, and they credit the Four Corners area of the United States as being the location for the creation myths of Native American groups like the Pueblo. Though still not commonly understood, Breathmaker became the creator god of the Seminole peoples (the name is also written as Breath Maker and Maker of Breath), and he became the center of a cycle of creation stories.

Lil O'Brien accidentally outed herself to her parents at the age of nineteen when they overheard her talking to a friend about liking girls. Half an hour later she found herself on the side of the road, with instructions to come back and pick up her suitcase the next day.
What follows is a heartbreaking yet hugely funny story of a young Kiwi girl - the deputy head girl from a posh private school - coming to grips with her sexuality in the face of stark disapproval from her parents.
Bit by bit, Lil finds the inner strength to pull herself into an entirely new world. Along the way she's called out for looking too straight in a gay bar, tries to break in to the lesbian in-crowd and figures out how to send her internet lover back to America. She falls in lust over a knotted soccer shoelace, explores how the hell to have sex with a girl and dates four women at once - unsuccessfully.
Lil's story is an insightful and honest look at how you figure out whether you're gay, bi or whatever - and deal with what comes next. It's an essential read for anyone who's had to fight for who they are and what they believe in.

In science fiction from the last century, we should now all be living in some kind of grand utopia. Beautiful spaceships should be carrying us around the universe. We should be jumping through worm holes and meeting new alien species. The times of war and unrest on earth should be things of the past.

Alas history has not gone that way. Instead, nothing seems to have changed in the grand scheme. Nations still invade other nations. Religion still holds sway over billions. Millions of people still starve while others gather in a harvest of riches the majority can only dream of. We kill and devour more and more innocent animals every day, while science is gradually uncovering the truth about the sentience and intelligence of them. We invent and test new drugs on each other on a vast scale. Like locusts we are chomping our way through the riches of the earth without a care in the world. Somebody somewhere in the future will figure it all out and save us. Won’t they?

Millions of years of evolution have brought us to this place. A situation where we are aware of ourselves, what we are doing and why we do it. And yet we carry on regardless. We are no closer to understanding the one question that has confused us ever since we became conscious. The meaning of life.
