Synopsis

In "American Literary Centers," part of his influential collection "Literature and Life," William Dean Howells examines the pivotal hubs of American literary culture during the late 19th-century. Howells' prose is marked by clarity and meticulous observation, blending critical analysis with a rich historical context. He scrutinizes the sociocultural environments that nurtured literary production, particularly focusing on urban centers like Boston and New York. Through this exploration, Howells delineates the interplay between regional identities and the broader national narrative, emphasizing the importance of place in shaping literary expression. William Dean Howells, often dubbed the "Dean of American Letters," was a prominent novelist and literary critic whose career coincided with the American literary renaissance. His extensive background in both literature and journalism, coupled with his friendships with literary giants like Mark Twain and Henry James, informed his insights into the dynamics of the literary scene. Howells championed realism in literature, positioning himself as a voice for the emerging American narrative through the examination of societal themes. This scholarly work is essential for anyone interested in the development of American literature, as it offers invaluable insights into the factors that shaped the literary canon. Howells' analysis not only illuminates the foundational literary centers but also encourages readers to reflect on how geography, community, and culture interact to inspire literary innovation.

Most Holocaust survivors who came to the US after WWII settled in big cities, but some chose an alternative way of life on American farms. More of these accidental farmers wound up raising chickens in southern New Jersey than anywhere else. Speaking Yiddish to Chickens is the first book to chronicle this chapter in American Jewish history when these refugees—including the author's grandparents—found an unlikely gateway to new lives in the US on poultry farms. This book relies on interviews, oral histories, and archival records to tell how they learned to farm while coping with unimaginable grief. They built small synagogues within walking distance of their farms and hosted Yiddish cultural events. Like refugees today, they embraced their new identities and enriched the community where they settled, working hard in unfamiliar jobs for often meager returns. Within a decade, falling egg prices and the rise of industrial-scale agriculture would drive most of these novice poultry farmers out of business, many into bankruptcy. Some hated every minute here; others would remember their time on south Jersey farms as their best years in America. They enjoyed a quieter way of life and more space than in the crowded New York City apartments where so many settled. This is their remarkable story of loss, renewal, and perseverance in the most unexpected of settings.

I first read about Thoughtforms many years ago. The concept is that you can create a “focused thought” with certain properties from your own thoughts and force of will.
It is said that conscious entities can also be created in this manner.
This concept has been around for thousands of years. Tulpas and Jinn also seem to be creations of thought in many cases.
This book goes into the histories of Jinns, Tulpas, and Thoughtforms which I think are all related and mostly incarnations of our conscious visualizations and force of will.
Many individual sightings and experiences are included.
This book also includes a Tulpa creation technique near the end which you should find very interesting.
Understanding all of these also leads to being able to create objects of power like powerful talismans, rings or other objects.

The gospel of Jesus has not always been good news for Native Americans.

The history of North America is marred by atrocities committed against Native peoples. Indigenous cultures were erased in the name of Christianity. As a result, to this day few Native Americans are followers of Jesus. However, despite the far-reaching effects of colonialism, some Natives have forged culturally authentic ways to follow the way of Jesus.

In his final work, Richard Twiss provides a contextualized Indigenous expression of the Christian faith among the Native communities of North America. He surveys the painful, complicated history of Christian missions among Indigenous peoples and chronicles more hopeful visions of culturally contextual Native Christian faith. Native leaders reframe the gospel narrative in light of post-colonization, reincorporating traditional practices and rituals while critiquing and correcting the assumptions of American Christian mythologies.

Twiss gives voice to the stories of Native followers of Jesus, with perspectives on theology and spirituality plus concrete models for intercultural ministry. Future generations of Native followers of Jesus, and those working crossculturally with them, will be indebted to this work.
