Beschreibung

In "Over the Santa Fé Trail, 1857," William Barclay Napton offers a vivid and meticulous account of a pivotal expedition along one of America's most storied routes. The text blends travelogue with historical narrative, intertwining personal observations with broader commentary on the socio-economic landscape of mid-19th century America. Napton's prose evokes the spirit of adventure and exploration, revealing not only the physical challenges of the journey but also the cultural encounters that defined the era. This work serves as both a document of discovery and a reflection on the expanding national identity shaped by westward expansion. Napton, an accomplished lawyer and politician from Missouri, was deeply influenced by the prevailing sentiments of Manifest Destiny during his time. His experience as a regional figure navigating the complexities of frontier life provides a unique lens through which he views the landscapes and peoples encountered on the journey. This background, coupled with his eloquent writing style, brings authenticity and depth to his narrative, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the historical context he portrays. For readers intrigued by the interplay of adventure, history, and culture, "Over the Santa Fé Trail, 1857" is an essential addition to the canon of American exploration literature. It not only enriches our understanding of a significant historical route but also invites reflection on the complexities of American identity in the face of a changing frontier. Napton's work is a compelling read for historians, travelers, and anyone fascinated by the spirit of exploration.

Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, becoming famous for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings. Accordingly, he was described by abolitionists in his time as a living counterexample to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Northerners at the time found it hard to believe that such a great orator had once been a slave. It was in response to this disbelief that Douglass wrote his first autobiography.

Following the Civil War, Douglass was an active campaigner for the rights of freed slaves . Douglass also actively supported women's suffrage, and he held several public offices. Without his permission, Douglass became the first African American nominated for vice president of the United States, as the running mate of Victoria Woodhull on the Equal Rights Party ticket.

Douglass believed in dialogue and in making alliances across racial and ideological divides, as well as in the liberal values of the U.S. Constitution. When radical abolitionists, under the motto "No Union with Slaveholders", criticized Douglass's willingness to engage in dialogue with slave owners, he replied: "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.

The men who flew American heavy bombers over Europe in World War II were very young—most were either in their late teens or early twenties. There they faced a gauntlet of razor sharp antiaircraft artillery bursts and fighter aircraft firing cannons that shattered Plexiglas, metal, engines, and bone. It is no wonder that bomber crews suffered some of the highest casualty rates of any service during the war. Yet, their courage and sacrifice would help the Allies secure an overwhelming victory over Hitler's Germany. That bravery and the extreme dangers these young men faced in combat over Europe are vividly portrayed in The Cruel Sky. Using the 451st Bombardment Group (Heavy) of the Fifteenth Air Force as the focus for this compelling narrative, author Robert Thompson describes how the bomber group was established and trained, what is took to fly its aircraft—the Consolidated B-24 Liberator—the opposition they faced, and the harrowing stories of the missions for which the group received three Distinguished Unit Citations, one of only two units so honored during World War II. Relying on official reports and firsthand accounts of those who flew with the 451st, the book provides a fresh and personal perspective of the deadly air war over Europe that was critical in defeating the Nazis and liberating millions.

From the activist who coined the term comes a primer on intersectional environmentalism for the next generation of activists looking to create meaningful, inclusive, and sustainable change. The Intersectional Environmentalist examines the inextricable link between environmentalism, racism, and privilege, and promotes awareness of the fundamental truth that we cannot save the planet without uplifting the voices of its people -- especially those most often unheard. Written by Leah Thomas, a prominent voice in the field and the activist who coined the term "Intersectional Environmentalism," this book is simultaneously a call to action, a guide to instigating change for all, and a pledge to work towards the empowerment of all people and the betterment of the planet. Thomas shows how not only are Black, Indigenous and people of color unequally and unfairly impacted by environmental injustices, but she argues that the fight for the planet lies in tandem to the fight for civil rights; and in fact, that one cannot exist without the other. An essential read, this book addresses the most pressing issues that the people and our planet face, examines and dismantles privilege, and looks to the future as the voice of a movement that will define a generation.
