1)Daen: Hamid is perplexed by the interference in his household, while his mother in law wonders about the “witch” (daen) who is destroying her daughter’s home. 2)Kallu (version 2): Kallu / Kaleemuddin returns as Deputy Collector to the family that mistreated him in his childhood. 3) Kallu ki Maa: Connected to the story Kallu, this narrative focuses on his mother and her life journey after the death of her husband. Introduction to the Kallu Stories: It is noted in the anthology of Ismat stories that Ismat Chughtai wrote two versions of the same story, Kallu. After writing the first version, she presented it to a peer for a review. Both she and her peer forgot about this exchange. Perhaps she was preoccupied with the characters and plot, as she proceeded to write the Kallu narrative yet again. There are slight shifts in the approach, although the characters remain the same. Both texts are now printed under the same title, with their respective version number.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

An impossible choice. An endless feast of talents. Within these 10 stories are all the glory, the ambition and talent of authors that are now known and beloved by us all. Genius in every name.
