Synopsis

In "Philosophy and the Social Problem," Will Durant explores the intricate interplay between philosophical thought and societal challenges, presenting a discourse that integrates theories of ethics, government, and human nature. Written during the tumultuous backdrop of the early 20th century, Durant's prose combines accessible language with profound insights, engaging readers from diverse backgrounds. The book reflects the intellectual climate of its time, addressing issues such as economic disparity and the quest for social justice while drawing upon the wisdom of historical philosophers to propose potential solutions to contemporary dilemmas. Will Durant, a prominent philosopher and historian, co-authored the celebrated "The Story of Civilization" with his wife, Ariel. His dedication to demystifying complex ideas and rendering philosophy relatable was influenced by his passion for education and clarity in communication. Durant's own experiences in a rapidly changing society fueled his desire to confront the social issues of his time, culminating in this pivotal work that strives to marry philosophical inquiry with practical social reform. "Philosophy and the Social Problem" is highly recommended for readers seeking a thoughtful examination of the philosophical underpinnings of social issues. Durant's ability to synthesize vast historical knowledge with pressing contemporary concerns renders this work invaluable for students, educators, and activists alike, encouraging critical reflection and inspired action within modern society.

The Roman Empire is coming apart at the seams, relying on German recruits and foederati to hold the empire together. The eastern and western empires are ruled by incompetent young men who allow their German warlords to rule for them, but imperial elites conspire against the generals. Yul the Younger is a Saxon boy negotiating life in the empire with strong ties to his family in Germania. His father, Yul the Elder, sends Yul to a monastery school to learn the ways of the empire, with the father serving the empire as a quaestor (treasurer) in the east of Britannia. Yul the elder’s job is to make certain that the mostly German troopers of the Saxon Shore are fed, equipped, and paid, but Romano-British landlords are withholding taxes while enslaving Germans and building lavish country houses. Life in the monastic school at Verulamium (Saint Albans) proves difficult for Yul the Younger with monks insisting he give up his Germanic gods for Christ. He is also harassed by the entitled sons of British elites. Yul dares to make his escape with his best friend, a Pict, named Keaffer. Both enlist in the Brave Companions stationed at Othona as self-declared Emperor Flavius Claudius Constantine opts to invade Gaul to capture the purple and stop the Germanic tribes from crossing the Rhine Frontier to settle in the dying empire. Tall, blond, and broad, Yul joins the invasion of Europa. He also finds love and seeks revenge for the wrongs committed by Britons against his family and companions.

From one of the most respected thinkers and public intellectuals of our day comes a book that is both a cultural critique of the state of our country and a robust summons to resist complicity. As we move through the world, we constantly weigh our conscience against what David Dark calls "deferential fear"—going along just to get along, especially in relation to our cultural, political, and religious conversations. Dark reveals our compromised reality: the host of hidden structures and tacit social arrangements that draw us away from ourselves and threaten to turn us slowly into what we decry in others.

We Become What We Normalize counsels a creative, slow, and artful response to the economy of reaction, hurry, shaming, and fearmongering. Dark offers a deep analysis of the ways our conceptions of ourselves and our use of technology often lead us away from what we believe, reinforcing the false narrative that we must humiliate others in order to survive. "I suspect we become what we sit still for, what we play along with, and what we abide in our attempts to access more perceived power and more alleged influence," Dark writes. We Become What We Normalize calls for a new kind of struggle, ethic, witness, and spirit that helps us step away from the infinite loop of normalizing harm into effecting true change for ourselves and the worlds we inhabit.
