Beschreibung

This issue brights quite a selection of mysteries and crime stories—8, in fact. (Though two are doing double-duty as science fiction.) Michael Bracken has selected a story by our acquiring editor Cynthia Ward for this issue—“Roadsong,” which (along with Eando Binder’s tale) is also science fiction. Barb Goffman has picked a winner by John Shepphird this issue. Plus we have classics by Stephen Wasylyk, James Holding, Dorothy B. Hughes, and Nicholas Carter. And what issue would be complete without a solve-it-yourself mystery by Hal Charles?

On the science fiction side, Cynthia Ward has picked “Memorabilia,” a post holocaust story, by Holly Wade Matter, plus we have a classic fantasy by Lester del Rey (from Unknown), and a classic science fiction story by Jerry Sohl (from Infinity). Here’s the complete lineup:

Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure

“Alligators Don’t Ask for Payment,” by Stephen Wasylyk [short story]“Shima Maru,” by James Holding [short story]“A Ring of Truth,” by Hal Charles [solve-it-yourself mystery]“Of Dogs & Deceit,” by John Shepphird [short story]The Bamboo Blonde, by Dorothy B. Hughes [novel]Following a Chance Clue, by Nicholas Carter [novel]“The Sign of the Scarlet Cross,” by Eando Binder [short story]“Roadsong,” by Cynthia Ward [short story]

Science Fiction & Fantasy

“The Sign of the Scarlet Cross,” by Eando Binder [short story]“Roadsong,” by Cynthia Ward [short story]“Memorabilia,” by Holly Wade Matter [short story]“Death in Transit,” by Jerry Sohl [short story]“Anything,” by Lester del Rey [short story]

After Ayla wins the talent show judged by Fasa, she earns a spot to record with him. But not everyone is excited for her. Her best friend Lindsay, and more importantly Lindsay’s mother, Ellen, are jealous of Ayla’s success and will do anything to bring Ayla’s shooting star crashing back to Earth… including murder.
Ayla’s sudden fame, however, has another more personal downside. Her behavior and attitude toward her loved ones become unbearable. Just when it seems her mother, Sandra, has lost the once strong connection to her only daughter, Ayla needs Sandra’s support more than ever. Nicole Jameson has always been proud of her husband, Ethan. He’s built a successful career in finance, and his employers, the Harrisons, treat them like family. They’re a firm who look after their own and even gave a loan to the company chauffeur, Conrad, to fund his pilot licence.
When the two men are returning from a business trip, their plane crashes into the sea. No survivors are expected to be found. Nicole is heartbroken, much like Conrad’s wife, Ania. They now share a bond of grief.
When evidence is found that Conrad took drugs shortly before the plane departed with him at the controls, the two women begin to wonder if all is not what it seems. But when they ask questions about events leading up to the crash, unsettling occurrences suggest it wasn’t a good idea to pry. Sinister-looking men follow them, the Harrisons are increasingly cagey, and the women wonder if there is not more to this than a tragic accident.
