Synopsis

Edith Wharton's "Old New York" is a compelling collection of four interconnected novellas, each capturing the intricacies of society, class, and morality in late 19th-century New York City. Wharton's literary style seamlessly intertwines rich imagery and sharp social commentary, providing a nuanced exploration of the Gilded Age's societal norms. With titles such as "Roman Fever" and "The Old Maid," the narratives delve into themes of desire, betrayal, and the constraints of societal expectations, showcasing the author's masterful ability to portray the emotional landscapes of her characters against a backdrop of opulent yet stifling upper-class conventions. Born into a privileged family in New York City in 1862, Edith Wharton was acutely aware of the complexities and contradictions of elite society. Her own experiences as a member of the upper class, coupled with her keen sense of observational detail, inform the authenticity and depth found in "Old New York." Wharton's background as a novelist, designer, and critic further emphasizes her mastery of the genre and her ability to critique the values of her time through an incisive lens. "Old New York" is a must-read for those interested in American literature and the intricate dynamics of social class. England, 1618.

At his manor of Thirldon, ex-Justice Belstrang - still at loggerheads with his old rival Justice Standish - receives devastating news: King James intends to purchase the estate for his favourite, the Marquis of Buckingham – and Belstrang must comply.

In the ensuing turmoil, while his son-in-law George petitions the King on his behalf, Belstrang receives a plea from a dying friend, Sir Richard Mountford, to visit him at Foxhill Manor. To take his mind off his troubles Belstrang goes - and discovers things are not so simple.

Sir Richard is not dying, but desperate. His brother John has been killed in an explosion at the family’s iron foundry, down in the remote Forest of Dean. They cast cannons for the Royal Armouries: a privileged and lucrative business. But Sir Richard does not believe John’s death was an accident.

Meanwhile, Mountford's cold-hearted son Francis treats him as an invalid. He fears things are being kept from him - and implores Belstrang to investigate.

The mystery deepens when a forester who was seen talking to Belstrang is murdered.

Only after a violent confrontation on the bleak salt-marshes does the truth begin to unfold - and its implications reach far beyond England’s shores.

This time Belstrang must follow the trail to a very bitter end, which could be the making of him - or cause his undoing.

William Hope Hodgson was born in Essex, England on November 15th, 1877.

Over his short career he produced a large body of work which explored and covered many genres. From horror, to science fiction, to stories on the sea, where he had spent much of his early life.

In 1899, at the age of 22, he opened W. H. Hodgson's School of Physical Culture, in Blackburn offering tailored exercise regimes for personal training.

Eventually the business shut down and he immersed himself in writing. An article in 1903 ‘Physical Culture versus Recreative Exercises’ led the way into fiction writing. In 1904 came his first short story ‘The Goddess of Death’. It was the beginning of an intensely creative period in his life.

He wrote novels, poetry and many, many short stories including series on the Sargasso Sea and Captain Gault.

One of his most memorable creations was his Carnacki, Supernatural Detective creation. This fused together his passion for sleuthing and interest in the Occult. It was a memorable success.

When war drew its shadow over Europe Hodgson received a commission as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. In 1916 he was thrown from a horse and suffered a serious head injury; he received a mandatory discharge, and returned to writing.

Hodgson recovered sufficiently to re-enlist but at the Battle of Ypres in April 1918 he was killed by an artillery shell.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway is a landmark novel of the 20th century that captures the disillusionment and aimlessness of the post–World War I generation, often referred to as the "Lost Generation." The story follows Jake Barnes, an American journalist living in Paris, and his circle of expatriate friends—including the charismatic and troubled Lady Brett Ashley—as they travel from the cafés of Montparnasse to the bullfighting arenas of Pamplona. With Hemingway's signature sparse prose and understated emotional depth, the novel explores themes of love, identity, masculinity, and the quest for meaning in a world forever changed by war. A poignant reflection on human resilience and vulnerability, this novel remains one of Hemingway’s most enduring and influential works.
