Beschreibung

In "The History of New York," Washington Irving blends history, satire, and social commentary in a masterful narrative that humorously chronicles the early Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. Presented through the fictitious persona of Diedrich Knickerbocker, this work employs a playful literary style characteristic of early-American literature, marked by its engaging anecdotes, vivid characterizations, and a lighthearted approach to serious historical events. Irving not only documents the formative years of New York City but also critiques the emerging American identity during the early 19th century, deftly intertwining fact and fiction to captivate his readers. Washington Irving, a prominent figure in American literature, was deeply influenced by his experiences in New York and his fascination with its diverse cultures. His tenure in Europe and rich exposure to the literary traditions there further shaped his narrative style, allowing him to infuse humor and poignancy into his storytelling. Irving's literary pursuits coincided with a burgeoning sense of nationalism, prompting him to explore themes of heritage and identity through the lens of New York's complex colonial past. This book is an essential read for those interested in the development of American literature and history. Irving's unique blend of fact and fiction not only entertains but also offers profound insights into the American psyche. "The History of New York" remains relevant, inviting contemporary readers to reflect on the complexities of identity and cultural evolution.

What if your political identity, your core beliefs, and even your taste in snack food weren’t really yours? What if they were built out of language, hijacked by desire, and quietly manipulated by slogans, myths, and a Symbolic Order you didn’t ask to be born into?
Welcome to the world of Jacques Lacan, where nothing means what it seems, and everything is your unconscious acting out.
Lacan Sucks is your brutally sarcastic, surprisingly accurate guide to Lacan’s theory of language, power, and why you keep voting against your own interests. From signifiers that never shut up to unconscious desires that vote without you, this book breaks down how politics doesn’t just use language—it is language.
Through roast-level commentary, existential side-eye, and actual philosophical insight (yes, really), this book unpacks:
How language doesn’t reflect reality—it constructs it
Why you’re not an individual, you’re a pre-written script with anxiety
How politicians weaponize your desires with slogans and symbols
What the hell Lacan meant by “the unconscious is structured like a language”
And how to fight back using the one weapon they fear: your own damn voice
If you’ve ever felt manipulated by political discourse, confused by your own identity, or just wanted to scream into a pillow while reading Écrits, this is the book for you.
No degree in psychoanalysis or philosophy required. Just a sense of humor and a lingering suspicion that reality might be rigged.

The end of the world has begun.
If I were you, I’d take my valuable time and attention elsewhere.
As you well know, Earth is running low on kindness and shame and air. Why put yourself in the shoes of others when, surely, you recognize everything revolves around you and you alone? Besides, the people populating this essentially meaningless plot are frivolous ants simply not worth their weight in words.
    Believe me, I should know.
Certainly not the twins at the heart of the matter of all things Apocalypse, Calvin and Trent, who soon must decide what—or rather whom—they’re willing to sacrifice in order to delay your world’s dying gasps. Definitely not the high school principal, Gary Mustafa, whose hyperfixation on balloons will leave your mind only loosely tethered to your head. Then there’s Love and Yew, the former a government hacker and ex-reality TV star, the latter a psychedelic therapist who thinks she’s better than you. The less said about these two women, the better.
And don’t even get me started on the writer.
So go on—get away from here. Let these silly ants fizzle under the magnifying glass of the Apocalypse they summoned. You’ll find no world-ending bangs here, but I bet you can already hear them whimpering.
    Let them.

This “jewel at the heart of English comic literature” chronicles the daily fortunes and misfortunes of a middle-age, middle-class clerk (William Trevor, The Mail on Sunday).   Since its original publication in 1892, The Diary of a Nobody has become a much-loved classic. It is a fictional man’s dissection of the everyday drama of his life as an office worker in a London firm. With dry wit, the authors step into the character of Charles Pooter as he navigates work life with not-so-respectful young coworkers and family life with his charming wife, Carrie, and impetuous son, Lupin. From home repairs gone wrong (painting the tub red), to the comings and goings of his friends Cummings and Gowings, Pooter painstakingly shares intimate details of his existence, with the (not completely absurd) hope of maybe someday having his memoir published. An ongoing tally of the good jokes he makes shares space with descriptions of grievous insults to his person, party mishaps, the annoying behavior of everyone around him, and Lupin’s on-again off-again employment and engagement status. The Diary of a Nobody gives everyone a reason to laugh—and recognize themselves in Pooter’s droll prose.  “The funniest book in the world.” —Evelyn Waugh, author of Brideshead Revisited  “There’s a universality about Pooter that touches everybody . . . [he] fits into the tradition of absurd humour that the British do well, which started with Jonathan Swift and runs through Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear to Monty Python.” —Jasper Fforde, Time Out  “Pooter himself is as gentle as you could wish, a wonderful character, genuinely lovable. The book is beautifully constructed.” —Andrew Davies, The Herald
