Sinossi

In his thought-provoking novella, "The Sincere Huron," Voltaire weaves a narrative that intimately explores themes of cultural relativism, hypocrisy, and the essence of sincerity. This brief but impactful work employs a distinctly satirical literary style, characteristic of Voltaire's oeuvre, blending wit and introspection in a way that critiques European society while simultaneously celebrating the innocence and moral clarity of indigenous life. Set against the backdrop of the Enlightenment, the work reflects the philosophical currents of its time, particularly the tension between reason and superstition. Voltaire, a prominent figure of the Enlightenment, was deeply influenced by his travels and the diverse cultures he encountered. His desire to challenge the status quo and advocate for human rights permeated his writings. "The Sincere Huron" serves as a vessel through which he articulates his disdain for the dogmas that pervade both religion and societal norms, drawing on his own experiences and sharp intellect to deliver a compelling critique of contemporary civilization. Readers seeking a blend of humor and earnestness, along with rich philosophical insights, will find "The Sincere Huron" to be a captivating read. Voltaire's adept storytelling not only engages but also provokes critical reflection on the nature of humanity, making this novella a timeless piece worthy of exploration for anyone interested in Enlightenment thought and satire.

G.K. Chesterton was one of the towering figures of British literature in the early twentieth century. A man of massive size, massive personality, and massive appetite, Chesterton famous personality, dress, and personality gave rise to an eponymous adjective: Chestertonian. Although he is renowned for the Father Brown detective series, Chesterton also wrote volumes of nonfiction. First published in 1917, A Short History of England is exactly that, serving Chesterton's goal of publishing "a popular book of history written from the standpoint of a member of the public." Filled with Chestertonian wit, the fast-moving history includes such gemlike observations as, Henry VIII "was almost as unlucky in his wives as they were in their husband." Of the great late Victorian/Edwardian trio of wits: George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, and Chesterton himself, it is Chesterton whose body of work -- writing in an unassuming manner, without great pretension may well persist for future generations far longer than its charming, genial author ever imagined.

Adeline Virginia Woolf was born on the 25th January 1882 in South Kensington in London.
Although lauded as a founder of modernist writing with such classics as ‘Orlando’, ‘Mrs Dalloway’ and ‘To the Lighthouse’ and, of course, many classic short stories, her background is filled with elements of tragedy that she somehow overcame to become such a revered writer. Her mother died when she was 13, her half-sister Stella two years later and with it her first of several nervous breakdowns. Appallingly it was later found that three of her half-brothers had sexually abused her so darkness must have seemed ever present.
She began writing professionally at age 20 but her father’s death two years later brought a complete mental collapse and she was briefly institutionalised. Somehow she found within herself a literary career and with it great innovations in writing; she was a pioneer of “stream of consciousness”.
Her tight circle of friends were the founders of the Bloomsbury Group, a movement whose legacy still influences across the arts and society in many way to this day.
Whilst the dark periods continued to interrupt her emotional state her rate of work never ceased. Until, on 28th March 1941, Woolf put on her overcoat, filled up its pockets with stones, and walked into the River Ouse, in Lewes, East Sussex and drowned herself. Her body was not recovered until the 18th April. She was 59.
She left behind a note which read in part “Dearest, I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can't go through another of those terrible times. And I shan't recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can't concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do”.
