One of the best known of the six nations is the Seneca, and arguably the most famous Seneca chief was Ely Samuel Parker. Over the course of his life, he was a Seneca chief, a civil engineer, a close friend and adjutant to General Ulysses S. Grant, an advocate for the Indian peoples, and the first Native American Commissioner of the Department of Indian Affairs. His marriage to a much younger socialite scandalized Washington, and he made a fortune on Wall Street and lost it all. He ended his life in genteel poverty, working for nearly 20 years in an obscure position for the New York City Police Department. Parker was a largely self-taught engineer, who worked on various canal projects, and was hired by the Department of the Treasury to supervise the construction of several buildings in Galena, Illinois, where he met a shy salesclerk named Ulysses S. Grant. At the age of 18, he dined with President Polk, later talked with President Lincoln, and had the commanding general of the U.S. Army as the best man at his wedding.
Stand Watie’s life connects the traditional Cherokee homeland in Tennessee and Georgia, the fight within the tribe over leaving for the West or staying on their homeland and trying to resist, and the Trail of Tears. At the same time, his life also includes the ongoing split between mixed-blood and full-blood Cherokee in the Cherokee Nation, and the chaos of Indian Territory during the Civil War. Like the country as a whole, the Cherokee Nation was split over the question of slavery, and with an estimated 100 slaves owned, Watie was the biggest native slaveholder in the region. At the start of the war, Watie was commissioned as a colonel in Confederate service and later as a brigadier general. His 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles Regiment fought more engagements than any other Confederate unit west of the Mississippi River. As a result, Watie is perhaps the most famous figure of a widely overlooked aspect of the Civil War.

I could never have imagined what desires lie beneath.

He was an old friend of my wife’s from her college. He was in town for just a few days. A lavish night out for my wife and I turned into a mini reunion. I hadn’t realized our date night was engineered to throw us together—not until he made his move. I was taken off guard by my body’s reaction—and by my wife. She had wanted this to happen all along. She had wanted to see my body intertwined with his. She’d wanted to watch as I was taken. And, God help me, I wanted it too.

The rest of the dinner went on without much of a hitch. Dylan behaved himself—for the most part—sending only the occasional lustful appraisal my way. I assured myself that my growing discomfort and arousal were in anticipation of the hotel room that Sonia and I would be retiring to after the dinner. If this was the kind of tension I would be feeling whenever Dylan was around, I hoped that the two old friends would not include me in their social life anymore. The way Sonia continued to revisit our shared interest in football and video games, it didn’t appear I was getting my wish. My nerves were on edge, and I couldn’t decide if I wanted to get to know my wife’s eccentric friend better or never see him again.

"Progress and Poverty" is a seminal work written by Henry George, first published in 1879. The book addresses economic and social issues, particularly focusing on the unequal distribution of wealth and the causes of poverty in the midst of progress and economic growth. In "Progress and Poverty," Henry George explores the relationship between economic progress and the persistence of poverty. He critiques the existing economic system and advocates for a single tax on land as a solution to address wealth inequality and eradicate poverty. George argues that land, as a resource, should be treated as a common good, and the benefits of land value increases should be shared by the community. The book gained widespread attention and sparked discussions on economic reform and social justice.

In this modern age the regional and national boundaries which define Scotland seem fixed and permanent. But of course this has not always been so.
In this book Alistair Moffat looks at the shifting political shape of the land long before its modern borders were created. In doing so he brings to vivid life the half-forgotten kingdoms that came and went during Roman times, the Dark Ages and the early medieval period. This is a fascinating journey into a tantalisingly little-known period of our history, yet one which is crucial to our understanding of who we are and where we came from.
