"A Tale of the Ragged Mountains" is a fantastical short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. Set near Charlottesville, Virginia, it is the only story the author set in the state. It was first published in Godey's Lady's Book in April 1844. It was anthologized the following year in Tales, published in New York by Wiley and Putnam.
In late November 1827, the unnamed narrator meets Augustus Bedloe. Because of ongoing problems with neuralgia, Bedloe has retained the exclusive services of 70-year-old physician Dr. Templeton, a practitioner of mesmerism. They developed such a rapport that Templeton could mesmerize Bedloe even when they were not together. The narrator decided to write down their story in 1845 now that "similar miracles" were commonplace.

A wry, thought-provoking fictional portrayal of ten pivotal weeks in the life of Leon Trotsky, inspired by the Russian revolutionary’s exile in New York City in 1917, by the New York Times bestselling author of The Company

On Saturday, January 13, 1917, an ocean liner docks in New York Harbor. Among the disembarking emigrants is one Lev Davidovich Bronshtein—better known by his nom de guerre, Leon Trotsky. Bronshtein has been on the run for a decade, driven from his beloved Russia after escaping political exile in Siberia, his companion and two sons in tow. He lives and would die for a worker’s revolution, at any cost—but is he ready to become an American? In the weeks leading up to the February Revolution that will see Lenin’s Bolsheviks in power, Bronshtein haunts the streets, newspaper offices, and socialist gathering places of New York City, wrestling with the difficult questions of his personal revolutionary ideology, his place in his own family, his relationship to Lenin, and, above all, his conscience.

Master of espionage fiction Robert Littell brings to fictional life the ten weeks the world-famous revolutionary spent in the Bronx in this extraordinary meditation on purpose, passion, and the price of progress.

Money can’t buy love. But it can buy isolation.
Dress so well, so polished, no one will ever dare to look me in the eye.
    Then I met her....
It was one night. No names. No problem. I gave myself over to the kind of desire I didn’t think I could feel again. When I woke up she was gone.
Now she’s back. In my office. My turf.
And I can’t stop thinking about her. She’s nothing like I remember. She’s better. Irresistible. That makes her trouble. Anyone who turns me on like this is trouble.
She’s smart. Smart enough not to get involved with me. A stubborn monster. An all-consuming beast. Until we can’t take it anymore. It’s better than I remember. Scorching kisses. Heated skin. Bodies slick with sweat.
Now she says we made a mistake. I say different.
My baby growing inside her is in no way a mistake.
