Synopsis

A bestselling memoir of a vibrant childhood spent in a thriving St. Louis African American community before “urban renewal” changed everything. Vivian Gibson grew up in Mill Creek Valley, a segregated working-class neighborhood in St. Louis that was razed in 1959 to build a highway, an act of racism disguised under urban renewal as “progress.” A moving memoir of family life at a time very different from the present, The Last Children of Mill Creek chronicles the everyday lived experiences of Gibson’s large family―her seven siblings, her crafty, college-educated mother, and her hard-working father―and the friends, shop owners, church ladies, teachers, and others who made Mill Creek into a warm, tight-knit African American community. In Gibson’s words, “This memoir is about survival, as told from the viewpoint of a watchful young girl―a collection of decidedly universal stories that chronicle the extraordinary lives of ordinary people.” Winner of a Missouri Humanities award for literary achievement, The Last Children of Mill Creek is an important book for anyone interested in urban development, race, and community history―or for anyone who was once a child. Praise for The Last Children of Mill Creek2022 Missouri Author of the Year WinnerMissouri's “Great Reads from Great Places” Selection for the 2023 National Book Festival “This is a story borne aloft by the sheer human joy of storytelling, of memory, of tender love for a mother and a father and for a vanished time and place. It is a book that, while steadfastly refusing the American fiction of color blindness, just as steadfastly refuses to portray Black life through the single warped lens of white-induced pain.” —TheLos Angeles Review of Books

A captivating and candid memoir from one of the most beloved and colorful figures in Toronto Blue Jays history

Over 11 years and two separate managerial stints with the Toronto Blue Jays, John Gibbons endeared himself to fans with his folksy manner and his frequent battles with umpires: “Here comes Gibby!” Winning helped too. Under Gibbons’s management, the Jays made the American League Championship Series in 2015, ending a 22-year playoff drought; then they did it again in 2016. Along the way the team defied odds, won over a nation, and with one flip of a bat produced one of the most iconic moments in MLB history. Now, in his memoir, Gibby shares the story: an on-field career that didn’t pan out, but a managing career that did … eventually.

Raised in a military family, he played his first competitive baseball in Newfoundland and Labrador, and, with the family now in San Antonio, Texas, Gibby, a catcher, developed into a first-round draft pick of the New York Mets. While Gibbons only played 18 major league games, he did earn a World Series ring as the 1986 Mets bullpen catcher and knew all the characters from that team, including Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Lenny Dykstra, and Gary Carter. In 1990, Gibby began his journey as a coach and manager. An old teammate, J.P. Ricciardi, hired him to work with the Jays, and he moved his way up the ranks and into the hearts of baseball fans.

A remarkable tale of resilience and healing in the midst of tragedy.
What does it take to rise above your circumstances? To look at your pain in the face and declare that you will not let it drag you down? To believe that despite misfortune, your life has worth and purpose? In the memoir she has written, Heather Drummond explores these questions and unfolds her journey towards abundant joy and freedom from suffering.
Heather’s life has been enriched with love, but it has also been challenged with sexual abuse, low self-esteem, drugs, alcohol, and suicide. In an earnest search for an escape from the deep sorrow that she faced, Heather felt drawn to the unconventional ideas of Garth, a man in whom she admired an unshakable inner peace and someone she fell deeply in love with. Soon, Heather found herself exploring the unfamiliar intricacies of Eastern theology while also trying to stay connected with her Christian roots.
Her transformative journey culminated in a newfound self-awareness, gratitude, and healing. This gave Heather the courage to share her story with the world. Heather’s experiences will resonate with anyone who embarks on their own journey towards self-discovery, joy, and healing. What she has left as a legacy for her son River is, in fact, a loving gift to all.

Colleen Shaddox explains how music unites her family even during difficult times in "Jazz is the Sound of God Laughing", her contribution to NPR's This I Believe series.
This I Believe is a National Public Radio program that features Americans, from the famous to the unknown, completing the thought that begins with the series title. The pieces that make up the program compel listeners to re-think not only what and how they have arrived at their own personal beliefs, but also the extent to which they share them with others.
Featuring a star-studded list of contributors that includes John McCain, Isabel Allende, and Colin Powell, as well as pieces from the original 1950's series including Helen Keller and Jackie Robinson, the This I Believe collection also contains essays by a Brooklyn lawyer, a woman who sells yellow pages advertising in Fort Worth, and a man who serves on the state of Rhode Island's parole board. The result is a stirring, funny and always provocative trip inside the minds and hearts of a diverse group of Americans whose beliefs, and the incredibly varied ways in which they choose to express them, reveal the American spirit at its best.

"Dickens is the highest poetic expression of the English tradition between the heroic century of Napoleon, the glorious past, and imperialism, the dream of his future. (….) Only when one hates the hypocritical narrow-mindedness of Victorian culture from the bottom of one's soul can one appreciates with full admiration the genius of a man who compelled us to find this disgusting world of sated sluggishness interesting and almost endearing, who redeemed life's most banal prose into poetry." A biographical masterpiece: The biography of Charles Dickens in the famous, lively, novelistic style of Stefan Zweig.
